"The sun set ; but set not his hope ;
Stars rose ; his faith was earlier up ;
Fixed on the enormous galaxy, Deeper and older seemed his eye ;
And matched his sufferance sublime — The taciturnity of time."

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

No! no!" the frail Castithan screamed, crawling with wounded leg across the sooty ground, dust kicked up amiss his frantic movement and carried like spores on the wind. Axiom s scarred upper lip curled into a sneer. His strides were slow as he followed the injured scrambler, limping slightly himself. He barely noticed the pain of his twisted foot, too fixated. Nonchalantly he pressed each bullet into the revolver chamber and with a sharp metallic snap, it was locked and loaded. His heavy steps halted as his bare foot pressed firmly down on his escapees injured leg. The Votan screamed in pain. Horrified, he rolled himself from belly to back, hands lifted above his body, shaking, as if somehow they could deter the bullets. Fear cloaked his features, brows drawn together and up, dirt smeared upon his face, arms and clothes.

"P-please, please sir!" He begged, he pleaded but Axiom remained unmoved, his eyebrow lifted ever so slightly, but otherwise his facial features remained calm and content...only briefly.

"I took you into my arms, gave you a HOME, a JOB, a PURPOSE" He spat, the upset swiftly swallowing up his demeanor,body jutting forward on each word aggressively and his pale hair falling forward with each strong movement.

"I I wasn t stealing!" the man cried! Propping himself up on an elbow, leaving on hair to waiver shakily in the air, his only defense.

"You shame yourself and disrespect me.ME!" Axiom s mouth was twisted into a full blown snarl. Fury driving his adrenaline, his Votan heart beating hard and heavy in his chest. He clenched his teeth and swallowed hard, forcing his wide eyes closed. The Badlands was not the place to lose his cool, nor draw too much attention to himself. He calmed, he breathed, he thought. He thought back.

Axiom was a tobacco trader. His crops had flourished as expected that year and h'd spent much time setting up and drying the enriched leaves. Then the raiders came. All of that time, stupidly ignorant that the world might one day walk on passed looking for more than a helping hand. Months prior, Tahkan had arrived at his doorstep with a gunshot wound to the belly and against his better judgment, as always, he had taken the lowlife in and offered him health and shelter.

He remembered the day of the attack on his home. Blood spattering bright and swift against the window and his Maid s body crashing to the porch just outside with a horrifying crack. The doorknob jiggled, then again, violent and indistinct shouting came from behind it as the blood trailed down the glass. He d grabbed Tahkan by the arm and made out the window in a hurry, towards the vehicle storage.

I tried to SAVE him.

Into the buggy, fortunately full with dried tobacco ready for trade and hit the gas. The road was bumpy and it was a tight squeeze, over rocks and thick branches they rode the invisible path. Bullets grazed the end tires and shattered the windows. A bullet sank into the back of Axiom s pale right arm and he had nearly lost control of the vehicle, swerving upon the impact. After days of riding on the rims, finally the left broke from the axle and the vehicle crashed.The metal spun off at 60mph and sank to the ground, slicing through the weak dirt. It was up and over from there. He remembered his body feeling weightless, how slow things suddenly were taking place and how hazy he had been. Eyes blurred and beaten by the suns hot, white light. Only pieces, faint memories could he gather.. Tahkan with a mute voice over him. What are you saying? Darkness. Axiom awoke once more and had struggled from the wreck, weak and dazed. Tahkan was running? Tobacco leaves spilling from the bloated bag on his shoulders. The swift pounding of footsteps. Axiom wavered and on hands and knees, glass from the shattered window falling from his blood soaked clothing as he pulled himself from the frame and wreck.

While still gaining his bearings he lifted his arm and fired at the disappearing figure. Nothing but a sharp yelp of surprise came from the distant Tahkan. He had missed. Axiom rose, shakily to his feet his bare feet. But where were his shoes? Tahkan. The sonofabitch.He lifted his arm once more and fired. A pained yell this time and his friend fell from a shot to the back of the knee.

Axiom, still very out of it, had been so lost in the replay of the events leading up to this moment, so surreal, he hadn t realized Tahkan s attempt at escape. Finally with the shake of his head he cleared his mind and view, the Votan had made it a good fifteen feet away. He followed swiftly and with a quick kick to the gut, Tahkan s escape attempt was short lived. Another kick. One more, for good measure.

"ooof, uuhpm." with the use of Axiom's foot Tahkan was rolled over to his back once more, face contorted in grimace.

"No, you weren t stealing," Axiom moaned, head rolling to the side, satire and sarcastic. He kicked a bare foot at the dark leather shoes adorning Tahkan s feet, tapping it s sole with a toe. Shoes that belonged to HIM. Axiom stepped to his side, crouching down and staring the petrified Tahkan in the face with deep blue eyes, narrowed.

"I want you to know, Tahkan," he spoke softly and grabbed the mans face with a strong hand and squeezed his cheeks, forcing his lips into an awkward pout.

"Defiance is all but a few clicks from here and upon our arrival " he paused, giving his head a shake to reposition the strands of white hair that had fallen over his eyes. Tahkan clenched his jaw beneath Axiom s hand, wincing, still fearful.

"Upon our arrival you no longer had use to me. Your life was your own to live But now?" He chuckled as a grave sob escaped Tahkans mouth.

"Now you will be punished for your shame for your cowardice. A little untraditional, of course but " Axiom s voice trailed as he rose up to his feet.

"No! Detivano! show mercy!" The gun cocked and no sooner than it did was Tahkan staring the barrel in the face.

"Your place remains beneath me and my name? It was never yours to breath." His voice was a whisper and then? He pulled the trigger.

Tahkan s final screams were cut short. His body jolted briefly from the shot. Clenched hands slowly opened and the muscles of his tense body relaxed in death. A red entry wound to the skull leaked red as the limp body was kicked to its belly. Axiom s eyes narrowed once more in disgust as he pulled the bag from Tahkan s back. He retrieved his shoes, too.

He moved quickly, now, taking what belongings he could muster from the wreckage. He had so much he refused to part with. He hoisted the sack of tobacco first, wincing as the strap lay with heavy pressure upon his wounded shoulder. A smaller pack followed, this slung over the left shoulder, filled with the clothes he wore during his trading seasons. He cocked the revolver and held it weakly with his painful right.

Suddenly distant firing of an automatic weapon echoed and put Axiom on edge. Raiders? Were they the SAME raiders? Standing his ground would do no good against the lot of them, or anyone for that matter. Sometimes survival took predicate over pride and with that he abandoned the total wreck and all he had left inside it.

Just a few more clicks, he told himself. He made his way to the tree line and continued towards Defiance along it. The load on his back and arm were heavy. He felt overburdened. But he was too proud to admit defeat and continued, strained, without abandoning a single item or pound. He wiped the sweat from his brow, gun in hand. He hadn t looked up or forward in sometime and lo and behold, just when he was ready to drop his things and break, there was the clattering of feet upon metal and his eyes met with the gate that stood between him and his new life.

"HALT!" An armored guard had him at gunpoint. He was so exhausted he hadn t even realized and silently belittled himself for being so oblivious.

"PLEASE!" He called out loudly.

"Raiders took my home and killed my wife. I am injured sir." He didn t know the customs of entering Defiance, but for a city claimed to be run and inhabited by all races, surely a pity card would get his foot in the door. He heaved the load from his arm and off his back and stifled a yelp of pain. He had long bled through his shirt and jacket and the white and gray fabrics were ruined by dried blood.

"DROP YOUR WEAPON." The guard called out again, his voice stern and loud. Axiom nodded and placed the revolver on the ground by his feet, kicking it to the side.

"I I come in hopes to trade tobacco and my wares. I have nothing else. I need a doctor." he added, before opening his sack and pulling a handful of leaves out, holding them up. The guard peered over and after a long pause nodded.

"Alright, open it up." He spoke to someone out of view before turning his attention back to Axiom.

"Leave your weapon on the ground." Axiom sighed, just glad to be let in. It had been quite some time since he was in a situation even similar to this and the relief he felt was uncanny. He placed the leaves back in his sack and hoisted it back upon his back, small bag in his hands and reluctantly, he left his revolver on the ground. The gates opened and there before him, for better or worse, was the city of Defiance. Amazement briefly consumed his facial expression as he took in the sight for the first time. The guards voice sounded and regained his attention. The human scooped the gun up.

"No weapons in Defiance. This will be confiscated until you depart. Follow me in, let s get you set up." Axiom nodded quickly in agreement and finally, he stepped inside. One foot in the door.

Internally the feeling of relief he had reveled in for many moments was gone the pretentious Castithan consumed his thoughts. This man was beneath him, most were and here he stood, followed, obeyed. But to climb the hierarchy one must first play by the rules. His status would be known soon enough, the respect he deserved would be felt within the Castithan community first and then the Defiance community as a whole.

"What is your name?" The guard asked, shaking the weapon and a piece of paper, indicating he needed to tag it.

"I am Axiom. Axiom Detivano."
