All aglow on a lonely, dirty street, a vending machine was recently installed.

Some would say it is tucked away and hard to spot, others would claim it is an obvious and blaring addition to the walk.

The vending machine hums softly, diligently waiting for passersby to stop and insert a coin.

It carries a wide variety of edibles within its belly, from snacks to sandwiches to beverages.

Some of these products are kept warm, others cooled, but all of them are advertised as fresh.

The bottled, canned, wrapped and packaged nature of the products suggest otherwise.

There is artwork of a little colorful clawsion on the side, smiling cheerfully, if not a little deviously.

It almost looks as though its grin is a little too toothy, if only for a moment.

What's it giggling at, you wonder?

The cheeky mascot implores you to stop by and have a quick snack, on-the-go or at your leisure. That you'll feel much better after taking a break for some chow that's easy on the wallet.

The vending machine appears to take all kinds of currency, but as a result the change you get back may not be the same.

The offered options are broad. You can choose from words like DRINK, SNACK, LUNCH, SWEET, SOUR, SALTY, SICK, WARM, or COLD.

When an option is selected, the machine will randomly pick an item from its stock that fits the description.

Not so convenient, for something that boasts the convenience of fresh, cheap nourishment on-the-go.

Rarely, the machine will not give correct change back, and instead offer nothing more than coin shaped objects, chocolate coins being the most frequent. A little compensation for your troubles, I suppose.

Metal bottle caps have even come out before, despite only tabbed and plastic sodas being stocked.

This may lead some to attempt the use of counterfeit currency, or else scam the machine out of the money they owe.

You might get lucky this way and a small, inexpensive treat falls out regardless of your initial selection...or you may receive trash, unknown in its origin.

Least of all, you may receive a slip of paper like that found inside a fortune cookie, reading simply in tiny black lettering: IOU.

Does the machine owe you? More reasonably, do you owe the machine?

You're not sure, but you feel the oncoming urge to yank out one of your own teeth.
