Appearance :
- He is most comfortable walking on all fours, but his back joints have deteriorated enough that he is able to stand and walk on them, though with a pronounced hunch.
- He has only one of his natural eyes left, but is in the process of attempting to create a new one.
- His body is decomposing at a slow enough rate that he will be able to live for several years at the least, provided he takes care of himself. However, he is also in the process of inventing something that will (hopefully) slow down that process even further, and perhaps stop it entirely. He does not plan on marketing it, because he is aware of the consequences. But he is afraid of decomposing entirely and still being conscious, because he does not have the safety of a simple mind in which he could hide.
Minion :
- "Shade" is, as far as Ess can tell, merely an animated scrap of shadow. It attached itself to him one night while he was shambling home, and has not left his side since. Ess is unaware of any capabilities Shade might be hiding, but is not concerned at present.
- Shade does not speak, but Ess makes up for that by speaking twice as much.
- It responds to Ess' every command, especially to carry things, which Ess has difficulty with even when standing on his back legs.

"Ess: a phonetic spelling of the letter S, which is the symbol for entropy, the natural increase of randomness and decay. When Ess reawakened from death, he was unable to recall his name or past. However, perhaps carrying on a trait from his earlier life, he chose not to follow the paths of other reanimated souls, commonly referred to as "zombies". He chose a path of science and education, deciding to devote his unending years to the equally everlasting search for knowledge. He gave himself the name of Ess to remind himself, and others who may fear the reanimated, of the technical naturalness of his condition. He is currently defined as a level green non-threat, allowing him passage through the society of the living."
