Once upon a time in midwinter, when snowflakes fall like feathers from heaven, a queen Montre lay down to rest in the forest next to an abandoned cottage. The cottage had dark window frames of black ebony wood, a beautiful blackest black. As she looked up to the sky, she saw two bright yellow autumn leaves, falling onto the purple roof tiles beneath her feet. The yellow on the purple looked so beautiful that she thought to herself, "If only I had a child as yellow as the leaves, as purple as those tiles, and as black as the wood in these window frames."

Soon afterward she had a little daughter who was indeed as yellow as the leaves, and as purple as those tiles. Everyone called her Princess Faire.

And the heart of the little princess was as dark as the ebony wood.

Surely Princess Faire was beautiful. By the time she was a young adolescent, her beauty had already surpassed that of every female Montre her age. In fact, long before she reached adulthood, she was named the most beautiful Montre in all the forest. Everywhere she went, she captured the gaze of many creatures. Her doorway was always blocked by mountains of gifts from suitors, who had all eagerly fought for her attention and for her paws in marriage. Though the exact time of its arrival/appearance is unknown, Princess Faire received a mysterious box wrapped with black ribbons. Inside, there was a medium-sized mirror, about 2 feet tall. The mirror itself was as clear as the surface of a calm lake and its silver frame was carved in exquisite floral patterns and decorated with large alexandrite stones. It was uniquely antique. Faire loved the mirror so much, (and didn't want to share it), so she hid it behind an old apple tree at the top of a pyramid of mossy rocks.

Every morning Princess Faire stood before it, looked at herself, and said:
"Mirror, mirror, behind the tree,
Who in this land is fairest of all?"
To this, the mirror answered:
"You, my lady, is fairest of all."

And then she knew for certain that no one in Subeta was more beautiful than her.

Over the years, Princess Faire grew arrogant and self-indulgent, too proud of her own beauty to either care or notice anyone else around her. She demanded the best of everything, and she expected all of her wishes to be fulfilled. Once, she threw a huge tantrum because her mother brought her a Strawberry Gummy Mushroom instead of a Strawberry Gummy Pumpkin. Another time, she blatantly insulted an Anyu because he exceeded the standard BMI by 0.2 points. Not to mention just last Halloween, she kicked a Maliss down a stream, and almost drowned him, for bringing her 199 Roasted Trout instead of the 200 she asked for. Realizing how vile and ruthless their princess had changed over the past few years, creatures from the forest slowly distanced themselves from her, and the gifts at her doorstep became less and less, until one day they stopped coming at all. Devastated by the lack of attention and praise, Princess Faire spent even more time in front of her mirror. She was convinced that this 'tragedy' only happened because she simply was not grooming properly. So she brushed and brushed, washed and washed, all day and all night, until her tail turned into a glowing mauve color from the effect of the chemicals.

On one particular day during the summer, Faire asked the mirror as usual,

Mirror, mirror, behind the tree,
"Who in this land is fairest of all?"
The mirror said:
"You, my princess, are fair; it is true.
But a snow white Jollin princess from the east is still
A thousand times fairer than you."

When Princess Faire heard the mirror saying this, she became pale with envy, and from that hour on, she hated the Jollin princess. Her rage and jealousy grew by the minute. And for the whole day, she thought the Jollin princess was to blame for why she was no longer the most beautiful creature in the world of Subeta. Finally, her emotions overwhelmed her and tears started streaming down her face.

Suddenly, the mirror spoke.
"My fair lady, I can help you to become the fairest of all."
"How would you do that?" Princess Faire asked the mirror in disbelief.

"There is a forest to the south of Veta, go there and take the road of gray pebbles. You will see an orchard of apple trees. There is a house to the right. Knock 3 times and six Maliss will greet you. You will give them a golden bead on your tail ring and ask for an apple. They will show you 3 baskets, one with gold apples, one with silver apples, and one with red apples. You must take the red apple, and only the red apple. When you return, go to the east of the forest and give it to the Jollin princess."

So Princess Faire did exactly what the mirror told her to do. She went to the south of Veta, she followed the road of gray pebbles, and she found the house of the six Maliss. Just like the mirror said, the princess was offered 3 baskets of apples. However, when Faire saw the beautiful gold apples in the basket, she simply could not resist. What's the harm of taking one more apple? she thought to herself. So when the Maliss wasn't looking, she snuck a gold apple into her bag. With the two apples in her possession, she set out once again to find the Jollin princess.

Standing in front of a large forest castle adorned with roses, Princess Faire disguised herself as an old traveler and covered her face, so that no one would recognize her. She knocked on the door and called out, "Open up. Open up. I'm a traveler from the south with good wares for sale."

The Jollin princess peered out the window, "Dear traveler from the south, what do you have?"

"A fresh apple, dear child," said the old traveler, and held up the apple she received from the six Maliss. "The finest from the orchard of the south, would you like to taste one?"

Tempted by the apple, the Jollin princess reached down and took it. And when she bit into it, she fell to the ground and died.Princess Faire returned to the old apple tree where she hid the mirror, and asked once again,

"Mirror, mirror, behind the tree,
Who in this land is fairest of all?"
To this, the mirror answered:
"You, my lady, is fairest of all."

"Now I'll have some peace," said Princess Faire, "because once again I'm the most beautiful creature in Subeta." That evening, as the moon hung high in the starless night, Princess Faire celebrated her victory. She took out the gold apple from her bag and ate it. It was the most delicious apple she had ever tasted in her whole life. And soon she became tired and drifted off to sleep. In her dream, Princess Faire was speaking to the mirror.

"Mirror, mirror, behind the tree,
Who in this land is fairest of all?"
To this, the mirror answered:
"You, my lady, is fairest of all,
But dishonest you are, and a thief. You have stolen a gold apple from the orchard.
Now a cursed life you will lead, a servant of the orchard by day, a princess at night.
It is a cursed life you will lead."

Frightened by those words, Princes Faire woke up from her nightmare in a sweat. Immediately she noticed something was not quite right. And when she looked into the mirror, there was a reflection of a Maliss, staring right back at her.

-One Month later-

A Kumo prince and two of his loyal servants were passing through the forest. The prince heard of the death of a very beautiful Jollin princess and wished to pay his respect to her. When they stopped by a small stream to rest, the prince spotted a tiny road of gray pebbles, leading deep into the forest. Out of curiosity, he followed the road, only to find himself standing in front of what seemed to be a small apple orchard.

"Hello?" He pushed open the gate and called out again. There was no reply, only the gentle rustling sound of leaves. He slowly made his way into the orchard, drawn to the strange apples that he has never seen in his life. Then, he saw a small mirror leaning against a large apple tree. It was a medium-sized mirror, about 2 feet tall. The mirror itself was as clear as the surface of a calm lake and its silver frame was carved in exquisite floral patterns and decorated with large alexandrite stones. It was an unique antique.

"Hello there." A voice from behind startled the prince. He turned around and found a Maliss staring at him. "Would you like to taste an apple?"
"Uhm, sure. Thank you."
"Here you go." The Maliss handed him a silver apple. "Only from the finest orchard of the south." She smiled.

"Mirror, mirror, behind the tree,
Who in this land is fairest of all?"
To this, the mirror answered:
"You, my lady, is fairest of all."
