It was a cold autumn night when a mother took refuge in the forest. An eerie forest, one of Europe’s darkest. The frozen ground cooled her hot flashes off as she was running barefoot through the bushes. Struggling to keep herself up, she ripped the clothes off of her body as it wanted to transition unwillingly. As she fell to the ground, she tried not to hit her baby belly. Her screams made the birds flee. Even during giving birth, she transformed back and forth. It was agonizing, but she finally gave birth to a pair of twins.

That morning, a lumberman and his draft horse were on their way to the trees he cut yesterday. On the path was a trail of blood and a moment later he heard babies cry. He got of his broad mare and followed the sound. There were two babies, wrapped in ripped clothes, lying on the ground and next to them their mother lied covered half down in blood. She was beautiful, even in death. Her skin was covered in frost. The man clumsily handled the babies and held them in both arms. The smaller one’s lips were slightly blue. It was about time they were found.

The woman of the lumberman was outside, breaking the ice of the horses’ water tray and feeding them some extra hay and oats. She was surprised to see her husband emerge from the mists already. She cleaned her hands with her apron and left the paddock to wait for her husband to approach her. He was holding his arm around himself, checking the inside of his coat. The horse stopped by the woman’s hand. The man opened his coat carefully and showed his wife two babies. “Found them along the road. The mother died.” He said with a deep voice.

The woman quickly took one. The couple didn’t have the luck to have children of their own, though they adopted two boys because they would be handy to work the fields. But now, they had two beautiful baby girls. The pair was quickly installed in a crib with hay as the husband build a cradle for them.

When the babies were about 6 months old, the smaller baby, named Greta, started teething. As for Britta, she already had a full set of teeth and grown twice as fast as her sister. At first, she was walking on all fours, imitating the dogs. Each night, she left the cradle to sleep with them in front of the fireplace. The parents were concerned about her, yet she was a lot less work than her sister since she is so independent.

One night, the couple was woken up by a cry and the sound of smacking. As the parents got up and held a candle above the cradle, they saw Britta munching on her sisters stomach. Her teeth grinded on the rib bones as she tried to make her way deeper in the body. They thorn Britta off of her sister and locked her up in a closet. She scratched and scratched on the inside as she growled behind the wooden doors. It sounded like a beast was in there. They buried Greta and waited in front of the fireplace until the Britta would stop trying to escape the closet.

That morning, the pair got the priest to visit them. They carefully unlocked the closet and found Britta laying asleep on the bottom. She had grown massively that night, as she was the size of a 4 year old. Her hair and nails got longer too. The boys were too scared to be in her presence anymore. “It looks like you got a demon on your hands” the priest proclaimed. “Or maybe… a werewolf?”
