Jackson "J" Sangster
"The operation is dangerous," Iain said. "You knew that. But I should tell you this: if your cover is compromised – if you compromise mine – I cannot help you."
It took a minute for that to sink in. "You can't, or you won't?"
Iain did that thing again, the one where he smiled with his mouth but not his eyes. In this particular case, it looked more like a pained grimace. He said, "Jackson—"
"So you'll let me die," J said.
Iain looked away. After a long moment, he said, simply: "Yes."
Not confined to any real style, Jackson's attire is everything from shoddy to formal, sometimes mismatched and sometimes not. The way he dresses -- or rather, the way he doesn't seem to like staying consistent -- may make him seem like different people on different days, but this is generally only true for those who only glimpse him briefly.
The Jackson that most people see is something of a harmless nuisance, if a bit immoral or jaded at times. He's not very trusting of others but is fairly shameless in public, coming across as the type who quickly bounces back from difficulties. He has no illusions of honor and will do anything to gain an upper hand, even (or especially) if it means playing dirty.
Jackson lacks empathy and guilt and is suspicious of others' good intentions. Although he appears to be good-natured and is rarely serious, the way he acts is not merely superficial; it's more than a facade in that it's simply the way he is, and he's been acting the way he has for so long that it has become him. He doesn't think that he's being any more dishonest than anyone else because he sincerely believes that it's the way people work.
Still, he's generally pretty chill and likes to mess with others. Jackson likes to use endearments such as "sweetheart" or "love," but they're just a manner of speech, and he doesn't attach any real meaning to them. He finds it hard to see others as real people unless he knows them well.
He displays a profound hatred for authority figures, particularly those who flaunt or misuse their power.
