Iguenta looked up from the pages of her book at the pale blue of the sky and the soft clouds slowly rolling by. Hours had passed since she had begun writing, but she had hardly noticed the time go by. It had always been like that. Books were a solace for her, an escape from the world. When she was young, she had been left on the pound's doorstep, unwanted and alone. Those times were dark for Iguenta and she had no one to keep her company. It was then that her fascination with the world of books begun. She found that she could immerse herself in the mystical worlds presented in the books and ignore all else around her. Moreover, reading kept her out of the way of the other pets and out of trouble. She breathed in the fresh, clean air of Riverside and smiled to see a bright red poppy beside her. Thankfully for Iguenta, those days were long gone. Now, she had a family and home to be with. When she was adopted from the pound, she had been taken to the sea witch to be transformed. The witch had infused her with the power of the ocean and Iguenta had felt the strength of rushing water invigorate her life. Still, some aspects of her days at the pound stuck with her. She still kept to herself most days and avoided trouble, except for when it came looking for her or her family. She would not let anyone mess with them, not if she could help it. After a brief stretch, Iguenta returned to her copy of Hidden in the Forest. She was reading about the adventure of a brave young Feli and her Lain companion. They had been tracking the source of a mysterious point of light in the forest when the light went out and the pair found themselves utterly lost. Such a book was Iguenta's favorite. Adventure stories filled Iguenta with excitement and she'd be on edge, wondering what would happen to her favorite characters. That was another aspect of her days at the pound that she brought with her. Although she had never been on such an adventure herself, the thought of other pets navigating the open sea or rushing through a wild jungle with beasts close on their tails made her heart pump and a smile rush to her face. At that moment, Iguenta's baby sister Symphonie came bounding up the field. She shook with fear and cowered behind her older sister. "What's wrong?" Iguenta asked, immediately shutting her book. "There, there's an escalade in the field that was making fun of me for having adopted family, for having siblings adopted from the pound," the pet said between whimpers. Iguenta looked up and saw an gold escalade coming towards them. She drew herself up to her full height and waited for him to approach. She could see, even from the distance that the escalade was still young and probably meant no more harm than the usual children's teasing. That hardly mattered to her though, since she would let no pet be mean to her sister in any way. The escalade, who seemed to have just caught sight of Iguenta, slowed his pace down. "Is that him?" she whispered to Symphonie. When her sister nodded, she called out, "You there!" "Me?" asked the escalade, innocently. "You," she repeated. "And don't give me that innocent look. I know you've been teasing my younger sister here and I mean for you to stop." He took a step backwards at the fiercely protective voice with which Iguenta berated him. "You ought to know better," she continued, taking note of his reaction. "Shame on you for picking on a younger pet for any reason." "Sorry," the pet mumbled. "I couldn't hear you. I don't think my sister could hear you either." "Sorry," he said louder, glancing up at Iguenta. "I shouldn't have said anything." She nodded her head to dismiss him and he ran back towards his friends, embarrassed. "Thank you, big sis," Symphonie said, grateful tears in her eyes. "Anything for you," she answered. -Shakespeare
