No one knows his real name, perhaps not even Waif. He must have had a father, mother and name at one time, but he seems to just have appeared one day out of nowhere and taken up residence in a wreck of a house on the outskirts of town. Crumbsnatcher the Staaree is more than happy to share space (and food) with the quiet, mysterious Waif. Sometimes it almost seems that Crumbsnatcher is watching out for Waif rather than the opposite. The Staaree is quite outgoing, and often charms the townsfolk into giving the pair leftover food and belongings that otherwise would end in the trash heap. At least, that's what the citizenry let the two believe. In reality, it is the only way they can manage to get the young Montre to accept their charity and aid.
Waif confides only in Crumbsnatcher, who has no words, but snuggles against Waif to comfort him when his melancholy becomes deeper than usual. Waif remembers very little about life with his family, but he knows his mother left him here when she could no longer care for him, hoping that the good people of the town would take him in and he would grow up without such terrible want. They would have, but Waif was sunk so deeply into depression that he refused to be adopted.
Waif has very few things of his own, but cherishes his blue-feathered tail cuff and one withered rose he keeps tucked into the case of the flaopy pillow his mother left him lying on. Someday perhaps Crumbsnatcher's devotion will allow Waif to see that he is still capable of loving and being loved without betraying his mother's memory. Until then, at least the two of them have each other. They are a real odd couple that proves love and friendship know no boundaries.
