Rocket and the Stars

Rocket, wake up! Rocket! come on Rocket! it's time for dinner!A large red fox nudges her head towards the youngling. Smiling tenderly as the smaller red fox opens his eyes. Another small fox shoke his head, He's day dreaming again. A small arm extended and wrapped around the edge of the tree. The young fox pulled his little body out of the carved stump. With a minor hop, he was free of the object he calls his bed. Any other fox would call it an abomination, but Rocket was proud of his work. It took him longer than he could remember to make it. He used what he could of his claws and scratched the hollow tree. Tipped and perfectly formed, this stump had been turned into a bed that looked like it resembled a spaceship. After much time thinking he smiled again and left his piece of work. He'd never tell them the truth behind his masterpiece.

When Rocket was born a shooting star past through the sky. The star burned up in the atmosphere and was never seen past that night. It was rumored that the star buried itself into the eyes of Rocket, as he always seemed to sparkle. Everything about him just made those around him happy. Ever since he was old enough to do things on his own, he'd become overwhelmed with the idea of the space above Earth. Each evening the stars would glisten, he'd nod and smile as if communicating with them. Each star that caught his eye was another laugh of happiness. He'd stay up all night to watch his friends, and sleep all day to avoid the sky that was created only to hinder his happiness.

His sister Cella was a great help to his cause, sometimes she'd seem to perfectly understand his actions, other times she'd seem completely oblivious. She was a very selfless creature and never thought about herself. Unlike her brother she did everything to make others happy, it didn't just happen. One morning with much excitement, she jumped beside his bed happier then a magpie with a shiny. When Rocket finally awoke she lifted to him a pile of leaves. The leaves were neatly tucked between one another held together by tree sap and what looked like saliva. Rocket was kind of unimpressed but he'd never tell Cella how he really felt. It was the thought that counts.

These thoughts were of course what he thought until he opened it. A tightly crafted leather hat, with a pair of goggles knitted into the front that falls just above the face, and a strap that fits tightly around the chin. The helmet resembled something a pilot from the mid-30s would wear. Cella had found him the perfect gift. His eyes glowed, the stars shined brightly today. He was so happy he dropped it into his stump and jumped Cella. The two of them played for the reminder of the day. Rocket might not have known it, but Cella was happier then he was. She valued their time together and with him sleeping so much during the day, she never got to spend time with him.

As evening again approached the creatures of the forest would soon sleep silently. All but Rocket. He muttered quietly looking up at the stars again, giggling lightly to himself. The north star, the one he'd referred to as sprinkle shined brightly tonight. Each time he opened his mouth to speak with her, she'd glisten back. Little did he know the glisten sprinkle emitted wasn't a response, but a reflection of the water close by. The later it got, the closer sprinkle came to him.

At some point that evening Rocket thought she might be coming to visit him and grant a wish. As she descended quickly to earth he readied himself to catch and protect her. He opened his arms as wide as he could and captured her in his grasp. Sprinkle sparkled brightly in his palms, a star which oddly looked more like an orb. Wishing upon a shooting star was something he knew since birth he'd be destined to do. He tightly closed his eyes and wished he could go with her home. When he opened his eyes, his perfectly crafted bed was now a real spaceship.

He hopped into the spacecraft, sprinkle in hand and began the procedure to prepare for launch. He paused for a moment and hopped back out, he went to Cella his sister. Leaned over her and pushed his nose against hers.

"I'm going home now"

She stirred in her sleep but didn't awaken. He hopped back into the machine and held tightly onto sprinkle. Minutes later he was in the air surrounded by stars and endless black. He was so peaceful, he'd finally gotten home.

By the time Cella and her mother awoke, he was already gone. Only a smoldering rock and his hat remained. Cella whimpered quietly and sat down grasping the only thing left of Rocket.
