There’s a story in Chinese mythology of the red thread of fate. The fated thread that links all destined couples together for eternity. One can try to hide from this fate, subvert it somehow, run away from it, but if two people are meant to be, their destinies are absolute. They will always find a way to meet.
Few have heard of the origins of the story of the young boy who was visited by Yue Lao and told that a young girl he saw as he was walking home was to be his destined wife in adulthood. Infuriated by Yue Lao's proclamation and having no interest in having a wife, the boy threw a rock at the girl's head and ran away. However, many years later, as an adult, his parents arranged a marriage for him with a young woman of great beauty in his village. Her one fault was that she had an adornment covering her eyebrow and when asked why, she responded by saying that as a young girl, a boy had thrown a rock at her that had struck her eyebrow and left a permanent scar. The woman, as it turned out, was the same girl that the boy had thrown a rock at as a young boy and that Yue Lao had shown was permanently connected to him through the red string of fate.
Xian is Yue Lao, the wise immortal who connects fated couples together with their destined red strings of fate.
His most common appearance is that of a bearded old man dressed in Chinese robes, but he has taken other forms, animal, young man, etc... when necessary.
The one thing he can’t engineer, and which he is forbidden to do is make a god or goddess fall in love with a mortal. Nevertheless, sometimes mistakes happen, often when he's drank a bit too much.
He wonders of this love thing, that he will never experience. His duty is simply to ensure that those who are destined to meet will. After all, if two people are destined to meet, then nothing is meant to stop that from happening.
