He attended The Kings School for most of his teenage years. The school focussed on mathematics, as well as Latin and Ancient Greek languages. His mother at one point removed him from the school and attempted to turn him into a farmer, which he hated. The Head of the school and the mothers Reverend brother persuaded her to send him back. He was bullied and out of spite became a top student, building windmill models and sundials.
He then went to Cambridge University. He studied Aristotle, Descartes and Galileo Galilei, the astronomer. While there, he began developing a theory which would go on to become calculus. After graduating, he kept on with private studies at the family home. Not venturing out due to the Bubonic plague which was virulent at the time. This time saw the development of the theories of calculus, optics, and the law of gravity. He also invented new variations of the double reflecting quadrant, a burning mirror, and an electrostatic generator.
The most famous legend told of Newton involves an apple and a tree. It's now been expanded (thanks to Voltaire writing a story 50 years later) about the young Newton being hit on the head by an apple. The reality is that Newton himself used the example of an apple falling which made him wonder why it did not fall sideways, or even straight up.
In 1687 he published the Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica which included his three universal laws of motion. These laws describe the interaction between any items with force and motion. since then, his laws have been built upon in the field of Classical Mechanics, and led to modern Physics and even Quantum Mechanics. Newton is the reason we can have orbital satellites, cars, airplanes, robotics, elevators, and modern engineering, to name a few.
“To every action there is always an equal and opposite or contrary, reaction.”
“What we know is a drop, what we don't know is an ocean.”
“I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies but not the madness of people.”
“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.”
“Tact is the knack of making a point without making an enemy.”
“Truth is ever to be found in the simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.”
“No great discovery was ever made without a bold guess.”
“A man may imagine things that are false, but he can only understand things that are true.”
“If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been due more to patient attention, than to any other talent”
“Plato is my friend, Aristotle is my friend, but my greatest friend is truth.”
“What goes up must come down.”
