Inlaid in the floor in San Francisco's Grace Cathedral is a symbol that would look more at home in the wild heaths and highlands of the BritishIsles. It is a labyrinth.
A labyrinth is a path which leads, via a circuitous route, to the center of an intricate design and back out again.
Some say it represents the hard and winding road to God, others claim it constitutes a mystical ascension to salvation and enlightenment, or even a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for those who could not make the actual journey. Many purists complain that the Labyrinth's pagan origins, whether a ritual dance pattern for an earth goddess, or a shoreline trap for trolls, make it an unbefitting addition to a church.
