Having grown up a very sheltered life, Nuq often found herself overwhelmed and exasperated with the colorful bouquet of traumas and complexes that the people who lived in Shinko's library possessed. It wasn't that she wasn't sympathetic- she was- she just found herself ill equipped to deal with it, and often saying exactly the wrong thing and upsetting someone. When things escalated, and dark forces began to assault the library's residents, Nuq decided to kill two birds with one stone.
It takes a rather wealthy person to commission a custom cadogre from Blackmoon- but fortunately, Nuq was more than good for it. About a month after she put in the order, Nuq was gathering everyone who lived in or regularly visited the library at the time- Shinko, Dust, Addy, Messel, Taita and Xoco- to witness her switch on their newly built custom cadogre for the first time. The robot, given the designation Cilan (Sai-lahn), imprinted on everyone in the room, registering them as allowed on the premises without question- because it was programmed with the standard routines that Blackmoon incorporated into guardian cadogres, and would challenge anyone else who tried to enter without permission.
But that turned out not to be the only thing Nuq had asked for; she had also asked for Cilan to be custom built with advanced personality routines geared towards psychiatry, emotional support, therapy, and counseling. In short, the robot was the library's own private therapist- a revelation that was met with somewhat mixed emotions from the group.
Fortunately, part of Cilan's programming included the emotional sensitivity not to pry into people's issues without being prompted first. Nuq found this to be somewhat exasperating at first, because she was impatient and wanted the robot to just fix everything, but Cilan insisted that in order for their to be healing, the afflicted had to first ask for and want help. Forcing herself upon them would be counterproductive as they would likely push her way out of resentment or defensiveness.
Though at first Cilan was largely a blank slate of a personality- chirpily robotic in speech and polite, but expressing little individual selfhood- she has slowly started to learn from her experiences and grow as a "person." Though she never deviates from her programming, she has developed a quiet, calm, thoughtful personality. Though her expressions are hard to read, she has learned to use body language to convey when she is thinking, or angry, or pleased. She is always willing to be a listening ear when someone needs to talk, and as she learns who her "owners" are as people, she gets better at catering her responses to them instead of using rote advice from downloaded psychiatry textbooks. The others aren't completely sure to what degree Cilan is or isn't fully sapient and to what degree she is just an extremely well programmed AI, but they prefer to assume the former and treat her with as much respect as they'd want for themselves.

When asked her opinion on the issue, Cilan is unconcerned and advises them to use whatever they like. She does not open her mouth when she speaks, her voice instead emerging from a speaker just below her jaw. Her eyes light up when she speaks, except for when she detects a threat and enters "stealth mode."
