To be close to death is to understand life.
Most people are put off by hearing what I do for a living and hobby. “You're a what now?” “A vulture,” I tell them with a smile on my lips when people ask what I’m doing picking up this racoon roadkill off of the road. “That’s disgusting!” I smile and nod, most people would agree with that; expect the handful of other “vultures” I know.
See, I take the dead and transform them. I collect them for the purpose of their bones. To appreciate the beauty of bones. Others do it for the purpose of taxidermy, skinning, and for the animal's fur.
I just like to give an animal a full-time home, after death has taken them. In a way, I’m keeping the animal alive by keeping its bones and celebrating its beauty. Well in my mind I'm. I love animals and appreciate them, even after death.
Once a creature is a home with me, the messy part begins––the decomposition. There are multiple ways to go about this, from a natural decomposition to one speeded up by the use of chemicals, or with the use of soaking the animal in water such as with Maceration…
Most of the time, I, however, prefer just going “bone hunting,” where its just me walking and searching around in the woods for bones, being surrounded by nature.
(Hydrogen peroxide is my best friend.)
Other vultures, don’t practice these ‘acts’ of vulture culture at all, some just appreciate the beauty of skulls, or taxidermy by the way of buying skulls, or taxidermy online; supporting other vultures; creating, and making art with and of skulls. Personally, I have always been fascinated with skulls and their beauty––it's hard to explain. I often draw, and paint skulls that I and others have collected, I guess to show my appreciation to both the animal and the people within the culture.
Overall to be a vulture, is to find beauty in life and death, to respect the dead, and appreciate the beauty in it. I’m proud to be part of the vulture culture, however small that part may be.
