there was a demon of deceit once, escaped from hell to prey upon the greedy, the naive and the weak-minded. his name was dolopion.

dolopion did quite well for himself, whispering in the ears of priests and politicians, beggars and bankers; the promise of wishes granted dripping from his lips like golden honey, too tempting for the gullible and gluttonous to resist. their wishes would be granted, but at a cost greater than any of them could predict - and their suffering would ripple through the city drop by drop, ever fuelling the power of hell while dolopion basked in the praise of his fellows below.

but his success was not to last, as one day dolopion bit off more than he could chew.

he had set his sights on a new victim, a child of ten with bouncing curls, scuffed pink shoelaces, and a smile still half filled by milk teeth. every day she would walk by the window of the candy shop, eyes full of awe and hunger as they roamed over lollipops as big as her head, brightly coloured taffy, chocolates full of fizzing sugar and jelly beans. so one day dolopion was there before her.

"i can get you those candies, you know," he said, slouching easily against the window. "i can get you so many candies you would never run out, not even if you lived to be a hundred and three."

"you're lying," said sarah (as that was her name), looking the strange boy up and down. it was a fair assertion, too, as dolopion did not look like an agent of hell on that day - he looked like a boy, with ratty sneakers and a too-big shirt and a strange pair of shadows on his forehead that sarah couldn't quite focus her eyes on. "nobody can buy that many candies, except maybe uncle fred but he's a dentist so he says carrots are way better than candies, but i think he just says that so he can buy a fancy car instead of buying chocolates for me."

"no, i can! i bet you i can, and i'll prove it, or you can punch me six times and i wont even tell on you," said dolopion. sarah considered this.

"you wouldn't hit me back?" she asked, just to cover her bases.

"no way! boys aren't allowed to hit girls."

"how would you prove it?" she pressured, leaning forward with her hands on her hips. it was a tried and true pose, one that almost always made the other kids in her class back down. she was very proud of it.

"i know how to grant wishes, see," dolopion replied with a wide grin. "i've granted lots of wishes. that's what i do."

"why would you wanna grant me a wish then?"

"because i'm real nice, and you go past this shop every day, but you never buy nothing, so why shouldn't i?"

sarah found she couldn't think up a good argument, so she squinted at the boy and leaned back. dolopion grinned even wider.

"all you have to do," he said, reaching a hand into his pocket, "is take this."

the object he fished out was a sleek vial so dark the glass appeared almost black, if not for how it glinted ruby red in the sun. the cork was gold and shiny. sarah reached out, and the boy placed it into her hands.

"what do i do with it?" she asked, quizzical.

"hold it above your father's mouth while he's sleeping," the boy replied, hands still cradling her own. "when his breath has made all the glass go foggy, stick the cork in real quick so the breath stays in there, and bring the bottle to me tomorrow. if you do that, i can grant your wish."
