It was April of 2015 when I first saw him.

That night, I was minding my own business when Mom called me. Shadow (may she rest in peace) was hissing and growling at a strange cat. Said cat fled before I could get a closer look. I did get a few pictures, but they were a little hard to make out.

For the rest of the year, I had forgotten about that cat until one November evening.

I was at the computer when I heard the commotion. I went outside and saw that the cat had came back. He was a skittish little guy and would stay long enough to eat before he bolted. I had to chase off another cat and an opossum so he could eat. He slowly got friendlier towards me, even running up to me whenever I go out in evenings. He loved being petted, though he didn't want to be picked up at the time. My sister came up with the idea to name him Mikey.

The weather was getting colder, and we were worried about him being outside. We also wanted to protect him from the other cats since they didn't like strange cats. We tried to keep Mikey in a cage, but he meowed until we had to let him out. I thought that he would never come back after this.

Luckily, I was wrong.

Mikey came back one day and plopped himself in one of the chairs. It was at that moment I knew he was here to stay. What followed was a wonderful year of bonding and living with a new cat. Mikey was very friendly and attached to me. Whenever he comes in and I'm not around, he'd meow piteously until Mom comforts him. Of course, as soon as I come back, he'd come straight to me. I feed Mikey in my room because he loved being close to me. Whenever we're outside, he'd come running out of the woods and sit on my lap. We'd sit for a long time, with me petting and snuggling him. Mikey sleeps on my bed, so comfortable and content. He even let me pick him up.

To see this cat go from skittish and starving to happy and full brought a great joy in my life. Not to mention I got a friend out of the deal. I was looking forward to spending many years with him.

Cruel fate, however, had other plans.

It was the way in my life. For every happiness I get, there's always tragedy to take it all away. Every joy I had was ruthlessly destroyed by cruel twists of fate. And fate, cruel and capricious, decided I was long overdue for tragedy…

It started in late April of 2017. Mikey went out one night and never came back. I was so worried about him that I stayed up all night calling for him. He came back the next morning, but from then on, he wasn't the same. Mikey just laid in one spot all day. We thought he was just tired from his outing. But never once did he got up to eat. The next day, he was the same, just laid there and not eating. And so began the month-long futile struggle to keep him alive. His weight dropped so fast that he was worse than he was when we first met him. And no matter how much kitten milk we fed him, he never gained back the weight he lost. I took him out a few times so he could be in the outdoors for one last time.

We found out to our despair that Mikey had FIP. And worse still, it was the wet form. No cat who had wet FIP survived for very long.

We tried to be hopeful, but wasn't enough. We tried everything we could to help Mikey, but was no use.

On May 30, 2017, Mikey was euthanized. It was a sunny day.

Even today, I still miss him.

I'm sorry I couldn't save you, Mikey.
