"There ya go, Little One... enjoy your cookies!" The young darkonite's face flashed with the enchanting smile that only a child could bring.
"Thank you! Bright the day to you!" the little girl replied as she carefully packed her purchases away in her bag, then scooted out of the shop. I smiled fondly as the child left. Funny to think she's one of my best customers. She may be an odd one... but her strange hobby doesn't hurt my business any, that's for sure.
The day was promising to be a busy one. I had 3 cake commissions that needed to be filled all within the next week. Plus, it appears that the Village Minister has requested yet another batch of his favourite pastries to be delivered this weekend. With another fond smile for the customer now fading from view of my shop window, I turned towards my workstation, pulling down the flour bin. I always enjoyed getting into my work and I started to whistle an old tune I'd heard ages ago. Soon I had the first batch of cherry coke rock cake started in the mixer and was just about to prep the red & white fondants.
"Dingle dingle ding"
The door chimes brought me out of a glorious daydream of finding a long lost recipe book of an ancient baker from another land. Looking up from my mixing bowl and turning from the station I readied a smile for whoever just graced my shop. I was about to comment with my usual greeting when I noticed who it was stepping through the door... it was Fantine herself! My greeting came out more like a whisper due to the shock of seeing such a famous Subetan in my shop. She had a huge grin on her face as she entered and gracefully slid herself onto one of the tall stools near the end of the counter, offering her hand for me to shake as she sat down. I absently wiped off some crumbly bits from my hand before grasping hers. Although her hand came away with a smear of fine particles she hardly even seemed to care, nor had the whispered greeting even make her blink.
"Now, I'm sure you can't be needing anything special baked for you, being a fine master baker yourself!" I finally managed to comment with a smile. "Nevertheless... what may I assist you with today, m'lady?"
"Oh poof" she retorted with a smirk, and a wave of her hand "Just because I can make things myself doesn't mean I don't want a treat from another talented individual now and then! And..." she continued with a knowing smile on her face, "from what I heard from the Minister this morning, your pastries are to die for! He would have offered me one, but he ate the last one just before I arrived." She gave a comical pout along with a wink, then began rummaging through her extraordinarily large handbag she'd plopped onto the counter in front of her. As she began searching for whatever she was hoping to find, I grinned as I saw small packets of baking ingredients get casually tossed onto the counter as she delved deeper. It reminded me of the state of my own backpack.
While she was distracted I (after wiping off my hands) pulled down one of the small ceramic plates from the shelf above. Reaching under the glass counter I snagged the nicest looking of the fruit pastries she'd mentioned and brought this over to her just as she made a small "Ah ha... there is is" and pulled a slip of paper from her bag. When she looked up she made another happy "oooh" sound and happily picked it up with delicate fingers. With a mischievous look on her face, she took what many would have considered a very un-ladylike bite from the pastry, chewing with a very satisfied look on her face.
"Mmmm, this is as delicious as the Minister told me... indeed!" She cooed after swallowing her huge bite. As she took yet another large bite she handed me the slip of paper she'd been searching for. I casually glanced down at the shiny paper and really didn't see what was actually written there as she continued chatting and chewing. I was still in awe of having her in my shop.
"As you may well know, each year I hold a special baking event, usually hosted in the next town over." she explained. "The best bakers are always invited by me to come and try out for the prizes. Only 10 spots are available so there is always a lot of competition from folks to try and catch my notice!" she laughed at her last statement.
"Oh, yes I've been watching it on the TV ever since I can remember." I replied. "In fact I always wish I could go to see it in person sometime, not just view it on a screen. I'd love to watch the bakers as they recreate the challenges you set! And it would be amazing to meet some of them face to face during the breaks... to discuss recipes..." I babbled happily, oblivious to her sudden dainty giggle at my continued blather.
"Well, good sir..." she said and continued to snicker with delight, which made me wonder what she was laughing about. "I'm sure you'll definitely have a chance to meet some of this year's bakers anyways." She kept snickering, then tapped the forgotten paper in my hand with a crumb covered forefinger.
"Huh?" Looking down I finally focused my attention long enough to register what was actually written on the paper she'd handed me. What I'd originally taken to be merely a memo of the baking event taking place, I realized it was actually a personally engraved invitation from Fantine herself. I was to be a participant in this year's event! I was so shocked I nearly dropped the invite!
"But... I'm only... I'm just a small town baker... not worthy of... not like those..." I began stammering.
"Oh poufle" she retorted "From what I've heard, read, and now tasted" and here she popped the last of the pastry into her mouth before continuing. "You have just as much talent as some of those hoity-toity bigwigs out there... and don't let them tell you otherwise!" she sternly shook her finger at that. "Now, you'll have 3 months to prepare for the event. Plus you need to be sure to finish up any commissions or orders you currently have... don't take any more until after the event" she laughed. "I'll be sending the rest of the paperwork over to you tonight and we'll go from there!" She smiled broadly and hopped of her stool, preparing to leave.
I was still in shock. I was vaguely aware of answering her and responding with obscure pleasantries to some of the things she was saying as she casually swept her packets and jars back into her bag. By the time my brain finally caught up to what was going on, she'd given a jaunty wave of farewell, and I was watching her back disappear beyond the shop window.
I looked back down at the fancy invitation, now with a few of the pastry crumbs from her finger sticking to it. I couldn't believe I was going to the most elite event of all! I was still staring at it when I suddenly realized my mixer was still on, and had to rush to save the batter from being over mixed.

SEYGO
This young lady is my best customer. She likes all sorts of baking goods, but cookies seem to be her favourite. I recently found out she actually takes pictures of all her favourite types of cookies, and has them collected in a scrapbook! Ain't that something, eh?
ZABETH
This is a good friend and fellow baker, though she tends to work with the more savoury end of the baking spectrum. You won't find a nicer gal who knows how to whip up a scrumptious loaf of rosemary bread... and even makes the best sandwiches to go with her amazing loaves!
CHEF DE CUISINE
Culinary artist and chef extraordinaire. This Japanese chef really know his way around a kitchen. His cooking made me learn to appreciate the taste of all those "weird" dishes... like eels!
CHERRY COKE ROCK CAKE
(Unlike in the story, this version is a simple one using prepackaged cake & pudding mixes. It still comes out tasting delicious though, no worries!
INGREDIENTS:
For the Cake:
- Nonstick cooking spray (for the cake pan)
- One box Devil's Food Chocolate Cake mix (from Duncan Hines or similar)
- One package Instant Chocolate Pudding mix
- 4 large egg whites
- 3/4 cup Cherry Coke
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cups finely chopped maraschino cherries
- 1-2 packages of Pop Rocks candies
For the Frosting:
- 5 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 6 sticks (1 1/2 pounds) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 5 tablespoons maraschino cherry liquid, plus 1 cup finely chopped maraschino cherries
For the Ganache:
- 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
- 3/4 cup heavy cream
- 1 1/2 cups whole maraschino cherries with stems
BAKING INSTRUCTIONS:
For the cake:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Coat two 8-inch round cake pans with cooking spray, then line with parchment and spray the parchment.
- Combine the cake mix & pudding mix in a bowl and mix well (blend on low if using a stand mixer)
- Add the egg whites, cherry cola, & vegetable oil and mix until combined. Keep mixing until smooth (roughly about 5 minutes)
- Fold in the maraschino cherries.
- Divide the batter between the prepared baking pans. Smooth into even layers using a spatula or spoon. Just before placing in oven, sprinkle the tops of both cakes with Pop Rocks candies.
- Bake until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean and the edges pull away from the sides of the pan (depending on oven, roughly 15-18 minutes). Transfer to a rack and let cool in the pans for about 10-12 minutes. Gently tip cakes onto the racks then let cool completely (roughly an hour or so)
For the frosting:
- Mix the confectioners' sugar, butter and salt together in bowl and mix til well blended, then whip (on high if using a mixer) til light and fluffy
- Add the maraschino cherry liquid and continue to whip until mixture is bright pink and spreadable.
- Add the chopped cherries and mix (on low speed) until evenly distributed.
To ice the cake: Using a serrated knife in long, even strokes, carefully halve the cake layers horizontally. Place 1 layer, cut-side up, on a platter or cake stand and spread about 1 and 1/2 cups frosting evenly on top. Stack another cake layer on top of this and spread another 1 and 1/2 cups frosting on top of that. Repeat with the remaining 2 cake layers. Cover the last layer on both top & sides. Use large spatula to smooth out the sides and top (it's okay if some cake shows through). Refrigerate for 15-20 minutes, then add another 1/2-inch layer of frosting to the top of the cake. Be sure to smooth it out to make a perfectly flat top. Refrigerate until ready to cover with ganache.
For the ganache: Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Heat the cream in a small saucepan over medium-high heat until beginning to boil. Pour the cream over the chocolate, stirring occasionally until the mixture is completely smooth and the chocolate is melted (roughly 5 minutes). Let cool for about 30 minutes, then pour this mixture over the chilled cake so that the top is completely coated and chocolate drips decoratively down the sides. Let set at room temperature for another 30 minutes, then top with the whole cherries in the very center of the cake.
Serve and enjoy!
