She sat on the edge of her bed, looking around at the small space she’d been living in for the past few weeks. It was nothing like her old home--now that she had to share the property with two dozen other elgari, they’d only allowed her a small space to grow a single tree into her room and attach it to a hall built for elgari that sat at the very end of the original servant’s quarters. Each doorway was different, some styles clearly reflecting the one who grew them. Hers was more modest than some, and more detailed than others. She walked over to one wall, pressing her palm to the thick branch that sat just at chest level. It shifted, wriggling downwards and out to create a window opening with a small sill. She leaned against it, pulling the towel from her head and letting her damp hair fall to her shoulders. The night air was cool, a breeze kicking up and sending a chill down her spine.

She looked across the empty expanse of the plains, a small cluster of horses grazing a few hundred feet off. The first swell of winter was settling upon Khavael. It turned the grass brown and brought a chill in the air that made Eralun’s cheeks prickle. The horses small bodies remained huddled together for warmth and safety as they ate, one always perking up to look around for potential predators. She shut her eyes, following the energy emanating from the tree that made up her bedroom and following the roots into the earth. The life of the horses was not quite the same as plants. She could never fully understand creatures the way that she could plant life. Plants were simple, calm--like an extension of her own body. Animals had thoughts and feelings, had complexities that she was only barely beginning to understand.

The horses were too far for her to even feel their presence, and so she encouraged the grass at the furthest point of her reach to grow, just tall enough to peek out above, giving it a little nudge to swell green again with renewed life. One horse noticed, perking up immediately and making its way over. The others followed, quick to stay together. Slowly, she led them closer until they froze just a dozen feet away, watching her curiously.

She reached out through the ground, into their hooves, feeling almost a dozen rapid heartbeats surround her. There was no fear, only a strange anxious sensation that came from prey. Eralun didn’t understand it, nor did she particularly care for the way it made her feel. She pulled away, returning to her room and letting her energy settle somewhere in the roots beneath her feet. The last time Redik had seen her, she had not been anywhere near as skilled with her abilities as she was now. He had always been fascinated by what she could do, and part of her felt a swell of excitement to show him how much she had improved.
