Story sketch:

Joie felt like Alltumn was getting a little crowded, and so to stretch out she wandered further from the town center than most other farmers and ended up fairly close to Astorya. She tilled the soil, pulled up the weeds, plowed the land, and planted her variety of vegetables. She waited the prescribed amount of time, watched the little sprouts shoot up and grow, and prayed for rain. Everything was going perfectly.

So you can imagine her surprise when, come harvest, she pulled up the plants and they...woke up. They opened little eyes, opened little mouths, and said, "Hello!" (Some screamed when she pulled them up by their "hair" though.)

(Joie does not sell these living vegetables but has made her farm a haven for them. She no longer plants them, but they occasionally plant themselves (have babies). She went to The Library in Astorya to find out why this was happening, and the Librarian found an old account that speculated why the Natural Museum of History was more alive than most trees: the soil in this part of the land was somehow magical.)

Joie found a plot of land further south on her farm to grow vegetables for her own consumption. The living vegetables were at first appalled by this, but they recognized that she needed to eat and couldn't feast on sunlight and rain like they did. They also double checked to make sure that these vegetables were not alive like they were. Joie does her best to plant other vegetables than the ones that she had originally so that the living veggies don't look at her so judgmentally.

She also occasionally tours with the living veggies, and they sell tickets for the show so that Joie can make a little bit of living. (The veggies would never let her sell other veggies, even non-sentient ones. That would be too much.) Since the sentient veggies don't really need the money, and Joie provides for most of their needs anyway, they have a 90/10 split. It keeps her afloat.
