A cool chill ran down his spine and made him curl up even tighter. He wasn't freezing, but just cold enough to make him fully aware of how miserable a situation he was in. It was late September and the days were still comfortably warm at Delphi beach. Yet the nights grew colder with each day that went by and he was afraid of the days that were yet to come. Just until three days ago he had been a stranger to sorrow and fear, the most innocent and carefree soul on the surface. One moment was all it took, in the blink of an eye he had lost everything. One minute he was the beloved pet of a young family of three. And at the next second he watched his beloved family get in the car and drive away while he was sitting next to a lamp, his leash tightly knotted around the pole. He still felt the shock that he experienced the second he realized that they left him, the car speeding away and quickly vanishing in the distance. His heart suddenly racing he had thrown himself forward, forcefully pulling at the leash, howling, barking, his heart so heavily pounding it should surely have burst into a million pieces - all in vein. They were gone. Long, long gone when exhaustion finally overwhelmed him, and he fell into a deep and dark sleep.

The night had brought him no relief. His whole body ached from his vain effort to break free from the pole and the rest on the hard concrete. Yet he didn't feel any of it. He slowly opened his eyes, just enough to make out where the little boy lay so he could cuddle up a little closer. But there was no boy. The was no bed. All there was the chill concrete beneath him, a forsaken alley and the lamp he was tied to. For a short moment he didn't understand. His brain could not comprehend what his eyes were seeing. But then it all come back. It hit him like a wave that tore him of his feet, like he had been punched in the guts as despair overcame him. He felt his life ripped from him in the short fraction of a second in which he felt both the happiness of his previous life and all the desperation that was to come at the same time.

Somehow, he had managed to wiggle out of his collar and leave the damned pole behind. He had growled at it for second and defiantly peed against the pole. His muzzle high in the air he
