Red stained hands that twitched and grabbed and were only one and broke apart and pieced back together as a single eye looked upon a single hand that grabbed a man and… The puppet opened her eyes, watched their yellow glow illuminate the dark storeroom around her. Something scratched upon her knee, woke her from someone else’s fantasy. A mouse itched itself, balanced on her joints. She extended her hand down to it, and it took the invitation to climb aboard. It was a cute little thing, and she was glad to have its company. So what were those dreams that possessed her? Were those really her hands covered in paint or worse? Her head jerked to the side, jostling her strings and startling the mouse. Why, in that instant, did she know how it felt to crush bone and flesh in hand? Surely that wasn’t her, she was so gentle, petting even a mouse to calm it down.

She was, “Fuppet, right?” Her speaker crackled in soft murmurs. “That’s me, do you agree?” The mouse only squeaked in response. “Oh I suppose that’s a yes. Well it’s very nice to meet you mister mouse.” A finger was extended, the mouse sniffed it. From greeting to pantomime, Fuppet walked her fingers around the little visitor. The joints in her fingers and wrist twirled, bending her little puppet in a plie. The index came up en passé and her tiny dancer twirled in a pirouette. She knew every term, every graceful sweep that the body could present, and she knew her own body could replicate them… Should be able to replicate them. That was right, she couldn’t move quite like that, just pantomime the grace that flickered through her brain. Wires?

The mouse hopped from her hand, bored with how her little dancer was now just spinning away in place. Fuppet sighed and drew her knees up to her chest. What was going on with her? Why was she zoning out like this? It was beyond the hazy recollection of the day, more akin to using someone else’s eyes, someone else’s hands, someone else’s dances. Her contemplation was cut short by the sound of a bell. A single thought overtook all other musings. Those fluid motions fell away in turn and she shakily pushed herself to her feet. Stiff, rigid, mechanical impulses bade Fuppet to slip into the shadows of the store. There was no hesitation in her hands as she drew a string between her fingers, wrapped it around itself. Those decorative cords were strong, strong enough to overtake the supple flesh of throats.

Someone was in the store after hours. There was work to be done.
