description

you and i have been through a lot together
that's just the way the story goes

even though your heart breaks, and you're down on your knees
anyway, you'll laugh again someday!

Dustin was never that much like the other kids. He wasn't very social, he never did well in school, and he spent more of his time doodling on scrap paper, hanging out quietly in his room or collecting bugs than he did watching TV or begging to go somewhere special, or other regular kid things. He didn't like loud sounds and was a very picky eater. He didn't need real friends; he was perfectly content by himself. And he loved insects. My goodness, he loved insects. This kid practically devoured books about bugs, and that graduated into a general interest in biology eventually. He knew so, so much about science, reading and art, and he seemed so smart, but when it came to socializing (and math...oh, geez, math), he seemed to bumble about like he didn't know a thing.

For the longest time, his parents never knew why he acted the way he did. Until he started having emotional meltdowns at school and shutting down when he was stressed out too much. So they decided to take him to a doctor, worried about his well-being. That was when they found out he was autistic.

They weren't familiar with this. So they looked it up, and they decided to tell him what this "autism" thing meant based on what they could find. Suddenly it all made sense to Dustin. He didn't have many real friends because his brain worked different; he loved bugs so much because that was his special interest. Everything was so much clearer now! And thank goodness, his parents weren't upset. "Different" or not, Dustin was still their baby boy, and they still loved him all the same. And wouldn't you know it, he loved them back.

A couple years later, Dustin still lives with his parents, and his diagnosis hasn't changed a whole lot about his life. His family and his teachers know better how to accomodate him now that they know what's going on in his head (for the most part), but otherwise, Dustin is still Dustin. He's got a big heart and a big imagination, and spends his days drawing, catching crickets, or running around in the yard playing fetch with his imaginary friend Fluffy.

His family wouldn't have it any other way.

Dustin is loosely based on personal experience and events. I am professionally diagnosed with autism, and I wanted somewhere to project. Dustin seemed like the perfect candidate. I'm not upset by my condition and as much as it has its drawbacks, it has its upsides, too. I'm sure there are more people like me on Subeta, and if you're reading this and also have autism, I support you, and I know that you can do great things!
