How wrong we were to think immortality meant never dying
In the West Kingdom, an ancient legend is often recounted; a time when centaurs, sirens, cyclopes, fairies, griffins and nymphs all inhabited the Oak Forest, living together in peace.

The Oak Forest is known to be the house of magical creatures in the West Kingdom, the lands far west from the Elysian Mount (namely the dwelling of the Gods in nymph mythology).

The legend recounts that somewhere in between the West Kingdom and Elysian Mount, lay a place called the Garden of Hesperides. In this mythical orchard, a fantastic tree grew, which bore enchanted golden apples. It is from these fruits that the Gods were granted their immortality.

The Hesperides; Daughters of the Evening or Nymphs of the West, is how are called three nymphs that were given the task of guarding the garden, together with a never-sleeping, hundred-headed dragon as a safeguard. Their names are Aigle, Erythea and Hesperia.

At some time in the history of the Garden of Hesperides, lived a fourth nymph by the name of Thara, known to be the most beautiful of them all. She was banned by the Gods from the Garden, as punishment for stealing a golden apple and giving it to a mortal named Theo, whom she loved with all her heart.

Before the punishment was enacted, Theo himself had been empowered by the Gods to be the enforcer of Elysian Mount's law in the world of magic creatures. Secretly, Theo made the end of his reign to find the Garden of Hesperides and its promise of immortality.

Without the consent of the Gods, valorous and heroic men were engaged in this task to find the garden, until many years of research led this mission to an end.

In finding the magical place however, Theo became captive of the nymph’s beauty. Convinced that he should live forever in company of Thara, they took a golden apple from the orchard.

Afraid of the Gods for experiencing immortality, Theo left the Oak Forest with Thara for the Graced Islands. In the south of the continent, it was an enchanted place protected by fairies magic, with a powerful spell that makes it change location every sunrise as to never be found by the Gods.

There, they lived many years in happiness and peace.

Nevertheless, the vacancy of the West Kingdom throne led to a terrible dispute between all magical creatures. To put an end to the bloody war, the fairies made an agreement with Ares, the goddess of War: they would hand over the fugitives and, in return, she would make them the rulers of the Kingdom.

That is how the days in the Graced Islands came to an end for Thara and Theo.

In order to punish the two for their treason, the Gods turned Theo into a phoenix, a long-living golden bird that burst into flames when death comes, and then is reborn as a new, young phoenix from it’s ashes.

The curse stated Thara and Theo could never be together again in human form, so she would remain a nymph while he was a phoenix. When he died, she would be born from the ashes as a bird, and he would be a human once more. And so this cycle would be repeated for all eternity.

A long time has passed since this legend took place, but as nymph mythology states, the love between a Hesperide nymph named Thara and a mortal named Theo is the explanation for the perpetual war between species.

Furthermore, whenever a phoenix is born, it’s believed it means the new death of a long lasting true love.
