the protector

"daemon", noun: The independent external physical manifestation of one's soul. Takes the form of an animal. Can shapeshift among different animal forms as a juvenile before settling at adulthood.

Her father had died that morning.

A young girl, barely an adolescent, she was distraught and confused. She fled.

She held in her tears and ran to her sanctuary, a glade deep in the forest, moving so expertly between the spring-fledged trees that none could follow, save Avempace. He bolted after her - now a hare, now a dog, now a bird, switching fluidly without warning between forms as quickly as her emotions could turn, the quickest they had in all her childhood. Finally, as she reached a fallen tree and sat, silent, he became a fierce lion, roaring her unspent frustrations out at a cruel world.

They stayed that way for some time.

The girl that was so full of life was dull as the grave as the tumble of feelings unwound in her chest. This was not fair. She had done all she could, her mother and brother likewise, they had prayed - their entire community had prayed! - for the cure, for the happy life the great man her father was had deserved. An end to the suffering was all that came.

Finally, she cried.

The sobs wracked her body as she heard her mother's broken voice calling from the far-off house. Avempace shifted again. He was now a bear, great and black and powerful, with dark eyes so intelligent and deep. He pressed himself against her, drying her tears, and they both knew he would change no more.

She grew. She hid herself and her emotions deep in the forest glade of her heart, and the great bear Avempace shielded her from all the harms he could.

Eventually, those harms came from the girl herself, and here, as at his core he was her, he was useless.

Other helpers came. Some knew what they were doing. They coaxed the feelings back into the numb girl who hid under her façade of stoic bravery. Others helped in ways they themselves had little knowledge of at the time, let alone the girl. And as she grew and overcame the cruelties life threw at her, Avempace grew also to know how best to help her.

Gradually, he led her to new places. These were not comfortable at first, but his silent presence was there always to guide her in the right direction until she found comfort.

It was true that she had been utterly broken, more than once, and that the world remained cruel and unforgiving. But broken things can mend. And in some ways, the mending can make one stronger than before.
