A litter of kanis kittens was born in a shallow hole dug next to an old willow tree by a barley field. The mother was small and inexperienced, almost a juvenile kanis herself still. This was her first time giving birth, she was alone and didn't really know what she was doing. She had done her best to dig a hole for the safety of herself and her infants, but as she lay there nursing her just born babies, she could not help but wonder if she had done enough.

She stayed in her hole for the first night and day after the litter was born, but as the sun began to set on the second day, she had to leave to look for something to eat. She stopped at the entrance to look around and sniff the fresh autumn air. It was the end of September, not the best time for her little kittens to start their journey in this world but she didn't know that. She looked back at her sleeping babies one last time before making her way to the close by river.

Right after taking her first sip of water as she started to feel uneasy. She perked hear ears and lifted her head to see what was wrong but as she noticed the predator, it was already too late. She felt sharp claws burrowing deep into her skin and flesh before she was swept up in the air. And so our young mother was gone, hunted down by a fester.

Near by was a lovely little countryside bakery owned by the Sweet family. They loved nature and often went for soothing evening walks by the river with their old kumos. They had, in fact, unknowingly witnessed the last moments of the young kanis as they struggled to keep hold of their kumos's leash as it tried to chase after the hunting fester. Once the bird had disappeared and the kumos calmed down, they continued their walk along their favorite path past the old willow tree.

As they were passing the tree, their kumos started sniffing the ground, following a sent towards the tree.
