Lí Ban (meaning "paragon of women") was an Irish woman in the 6th century who survived drowning when a lake flooded by staying in an underwater chamber for a year, after which she was transformed into mermaid, half-human, half-salmon. She was given 300 years to roam the waters as a mermaid.

Lí Ban was heard singing by a messenger of St. Comgall who was on a ship to Rome. She was pulled from the sea in a fishnet in 558 A.D, was baptized by St. Comgall, and then given the name Muirgein ("sea-born") or Muirgeilt ("sea-wander"). She died immediately after baptism, ascending directly to heaven after willingly giving up her 300 year lifespan in exchange. She is known as St. Muirgen in genealogies of Irish saints, with her feast day being 27 January.
