As long as mankind has looked to the stars, the constellations have both guarded and guided them. They have led them to their destinations and kept them from straying from their paths. They listened to their wishes sent up to the heavens and hoarded them covetously. The more revered constellations strived to answer those wishes they could, streaking across the skies to grant the wishes thrown so feverishly to them.
There were countless constellations across the skies, all seeped in cultures and their names spoken in every tongue on Earth.
Harkyn was part of a smaller, fainter constellation. At one time he had been alone, chasing endlessly after a goose who had been unfortunate enough to come close to his territory. Yet now something changed over the years and the goose, Quinn he later found out, was always in his territory. It had become their territory, their constellation and it was absolutely dreadful. No longer was he the lone fox streaking across the skies, gathering whatever errant wishes came to him, now he was the fox and the goose. Quinn was a chatterbox that never seemed to run out of things to say, or a voice to say them with.
Harkyn wasn't sure how much longer he could stand Quinn's voice, or the other constellations crowding in on him. Horse and Pegasus constantly bickered, the Arrow zipped around mercilessly, while the Swan, Eagle, and Dolphin all swooped and leaped around him with more energy than he cared to emit doing such pointless activities.
So the fox fled from his summer skies with hope of some respite. Imagine his surprise when he spotted a large tiger walking his way.

"Ah! Apologies! I seem to have wandered into new land! I'm assuming this is yours?" Harkyn called conversationally. He knew better than anyone the possessive nature which all constellations guarded their territory. He being the possible exception.
"What purpose has brought you here, fox?"
"Rather rude address! I do have a name!" He paused here, but if he expected a change of temperament he was sorely disappointed. "Oh, well my name is Harkyn! Thanks so much for asking!" He spoke sarcastically. The tiger wasn't moved in the slightest to his snappy response.
"Leave," she demanded. The tiger turned, starlight glittering in her wake.
"Come now! I've traveled a long way! Could I at least not also learn your name? I wish to gather information!" He bounded after her. Anyone was surely better than the others he had been surrounded by!
"For what purpose?" She sniffed at him with disdain. Harkyn trotted by her side with his tail swishing close to her side and dust like that of a comet tail followed the movement. He looked up and grinned brightly in an effort to warm her chilly responses.
"Is that not what our job entails? To gather information in order to better serve and answer those humans that plead to us?" She paused then and growled as Harkyn graced her with an even larger smile. Gotcha~
"I suppose you speak a grain of truth... I am called Yakira." The fox nearly froze at the name. Of course the more famous constellations were well known across even the farthest reaches of the skies, but The Tiger of the West was halfway across the world from his! Or... at least he thought it was... it was far regardless!
"Yakira! Famed White Tiger of Autumn?" He bounced by her side and let his fur brush hers. "What a true honor it is to meet one as yourself!" Harkyn may have laid it on a bit thick, but he was truly happy to meet someone of such warm regard. Yakira was known to be a stout guardian of her humans and he respected any constellation that went out of their way for the wishes thrown to them. After all, he surely didn't go too far in helping them so it only seemed fair to respect those that did. "I am from the summer skies myself. Perhaps you've heard of the fox and the goose constellation?"

"No." He frowned at her snipped reply, bristling all the more as she laughed at his stung pride.
"Well, not all of us can be famous... But that goose was getting to be tiresome company! I thought then, why not explore?" He changed the subject smoothly to move away from his lesser known existence. He was part of the Summer Triangle for Polaris's sake! But he would let it slide for the chance to know Yakira.
"The skies have been divided since the beginning of time. There is no reason to venture outside of its borders."
"Well, with that logic, then there's no reason not to go further than our own territories." Yakira came to a halt then and stared down at him, and he couldn't help but give her a smug smirk in reply. She snorted at him to which his response was only to chuckle softly to himself. While she may be well known and strong, he had always been proud of his wit.
"You surely are clever with your words. You twist them around your tongue and they drip like stardew."
"I take that as the highest compliment, my esteemed Tiger! May I take that as permission to continue speaking?" Yakira blinked before shaking her head and smiling ruefully.
"I doubt even my refusal would stem the flow of conversation that seems endless from you. I must simply put up with it I suppose." He grinned at her acceptance and immediately burst into a tirade of subjects, eager to find the ones she would enjoy discussing with him.

"Unfortunately, I will have to leave your company soon, Yakira." He felt her shift from her position beside him. Harkyn looked up regretfully and his tail curled more tightly around him. The streaks of stars from their pelts blended until it created a new constellation between them. He wondered briefly what name the humans would give the splatter of stars their fur created.
"I have tried to rid of you for weeks and you are suddenly leaving me?" She teased. He let out a bark of laughter and graced her with that familiar glitter of his playful eyes. It had taken many days indeed, but he had finally come to break through that wall she had so carefully erected.
"Come now! I know you have come to love my jokes!" She snorted at that. "Alright, I confess they are terrible, but my conversation has at least been engaging!"
"It's been ceaseless," she deadpanned.
"So cold! And on my departing day!" He stood then and shook himself with her following his movements. "The beginning of autumn is coming and I must take my place among the summer skies once more. Much as I would love to leave that loud mouth goose behind!" The tiger fixed him with a heavy stare to which he huffed indignantly. "You think I am bad, but if you met Quinn you would reconsider your opinion!" He hesitated before looking up at her. He formed the question in his mind a hundred times as he stared up at her. "Would it be... Could I possibly visit again? When our skies cross may I be welcome here?" This was it, he was putting himself out in the open. He longed to hear her say yes so that he could continue to kindle this relationship between them. He had not met someone so engaging in eons and Yakira was as respectable as she was kind to the humans who pleaded her help. He wasn't sure what rejection would do to him.
"You were not welcome before and yet you arrived, and stayed despite my protests." Here he felt hurt creep across his heart and struggled to compose himself as she crouched by his side. "Yet I will not lie and say I haven't enjoyed your company. If you would like to walk my territory again, I would not protest it. I should rather look forward to it." Harkyn brightened then, the stars weaved into his fur glowing with his joy. He paused to make sure she would not recant her words before threading through her legs with a yip of excitement.
"Then I look forward to the company you provide, Yakira. Far better than Quinn!"
Every September, when summer blends into autumn, for just one month, the constellations seem to move across the sky. A fox walks along a starlit path with a tiger, their stars mingling until one cannot be told apart from the other.

an eternity with you would never be enough time
