You're half a world away
Thank you, Captain Uphre. It is because of you that I am awake.
As she hums and pokes at one of her bionic arms with a screwdriver in the other hand, I scroll quickly by on my computer for whatever I’ve missed since the last time I was awake.
LAST LOGGED IN: 52 days ago.
No matter how small the number might be, it always bothers me. I glance out of the window. Pink and grey starstuff swirl around.
"Wicked storm, eh?" Uphre says. "I nearly didn't make it 'ere!"
"It is." I reply, but it still makes me happy to see.
But in my mind I whisper every single word you say.I'm allowed one small plant; Company, to last me 100 years in slumber. Its name is Thellis, from a program about a dentist in a submarine. Vik Kavis showed me episodes when he was here.
"This is 'Dentist What'," He said.
"That's a silly name."
"He travels the oceans and solves problems with his assistant, Thellis..."
I encouraged him to watch as many as he liked as I read my e-mail, watered the (once nameless) Thellis, and checked the timer - LAST LOGGED IN: 682 DAYS AGO.
He asked me questions about living up here; Why? A curse. I can only wake for the length of time that I have a visitor. How long have I been up here? About 37 years. Have I aged? I don't think so. I even managed to use my tiny bathroom to bathe for an hour - Vik politely kept his eyes firmly on the screen.
He thanked me for my time - "I'll mention you in the description. 'To the Cursed Star Lady in the silver satellite."
(Vik never sent me a copy of the book, so I hope he didn't really refer to me as 'The Cursed Star Lady')
It was a fairly boring show. Not what you want to watch when your waking hours are limited to ''randomly, every few months or years.'' But I did like the name Thellis. So I took it for my plant, making a note to name it whenever I woke up again.
And before you sleep at night
"Ooh - you are real." The Irion cooed, touching my face with a large claw.
I wiggle back. "Yes..."
"The all-mother was right," She says again, in a sing-song voice. "Of course, she always is."
She creeps me out, though a strange visitor is hardly unusual, and she's not the worst I've had.
Walking around, she - Vielle - waves around smoking herbs, sneezing every so often. They smell like death. "Please - Don't do that. I have to live with that."
Stopping. Looking at me weird. "But it's a blessing! It's what I'm supposed to do! Or I may not get into the afterlife if I don't do something to help the Star Sleeper"
"Well, thank you, but no. Maybe you could do something else. Non-scented."
"A gift!" Vielle digs into deep, swishy pockets and withdraws...something small, and carved. She places them on the low living-room table. "Flowers. Roses, carved from opal."
Steely grey and silvery white sometimes faded into a rich, bright blue. Five of them. "They're lovely." I whisper. "Your all-mother will be proud."
"Yes," She wipes her eyes with a wing - And trills loudly. "Let me make you something to eat! You must be hungry after..."
2 Years since I was last awake. 93 years in this satellite. Was I no longer a novelty to the people below, would I have to last the next 7 years without any kind of company? I relent. "That...would be great."
Vielle stays with me as long as she can - At least a week, telling me stories about her beliefs, cooking, painting. Eventually, she says she has to continue on, to others who may need her help. "I'll try and be back." She says, giving me a hug.
I wonder if she will. No one has ever visited twice.
You pray to me, your lucky star, your singing satellite.
I don't even know what year it is when I find myself awake, but I see a kindly old Chai staring at me.
"Hello, Rampion - My name is Orion. Excuse me for not hanging around in the docking bay, but I thought you'd be happy to know - It's done."
I sit up and stretch, still seated in my window bed. "What's done?"
"Your tenure. Your curse. You can return home."
That wakes me up properly. How come I didn't wake up the moment it ended? When I ask him, he checks his pocket watch. "Actually, the full 100 years wouldn't be until another 3 hours from now, but I thought you might not want to wait. They’re so excited to meet you. And I was, too,” He says, eyes shining. “For a hundred years, people have heard about the Lady Rampion, Star Sleeper. Many people hardly believed that you were real, despite the visitors, but still, they wished to you. Prayed. And quite a few of them say their hopes came true because they talked to you. And now, you can show them.” He walks back to the docking bay - which I see is open to the interior of a small craft.
I can't say I ever remembered receiving wishes and hopes in my dreams - but I did so much dreaming, it could very well have happened. Standing up, One last look around the satellite. Prison. Home. Then at the interior of ship docked in my port, and Orion standing at the opening, paw outstretched.
I gather Thellis, and my opal flowers and walk back to him. “Ok - Lady Rampion is coming home.”
