Unlike the mob of shadow creatures that had attacked earlier, the two on their own weren't nearly so bold. Neither Erelin nor Rasdan knew exactly how far they'd traveled - far enough to the north that the weather had changed - but somehow they never once lost track of the little gremlins. In fact, Erelin noticed that every time she and Rasdan slowed to catch their breath, the creatures also slowed down, even looking back as if to make sure they were still following.
It has to be a trap, Erelin realized early on, and so she remained alert, constantly looking for an ambush. Judging from the way Rasdan glanced around, he also expected one. He'd sent his little minion parade home almost immediately after they'd left the borders of the Sacred Lands, fearing for their safety. But no trap had shown itself yet, nor was there any sign of Galena.
A little further on, the dunes leveled out, and the winds blew colder. Rasdan was surprised to see another trio of shapes coming up alongside them - until he saw that they too, were chasing a pair of shadowy creatures. Erelin also spied the group, and recognized two of them: Cobalt and Cleria. With them was an Irion she'd never met, but she could take an educated guess as to who it was.
Cobalt was the first to notice them, and called for the rest of her group to stop. Everyone came together to talk.
"Miss Cobalt, I assume we're stopping for a good reason?" said the Irion, in an appropriately lofty voice.
"We are, Lady Mertensia," she answered, confirming Erelin's suspicions. "This Donadak here helped your brother the first time those creatures attacked your store."
"Is that so? Well then, I suppose I should spare a moment to offer you my thanks," said Mertensia, turning to Erelin. "However, I must ask. How did you know my brother had been abducted?"
The shock was clear on both Erelin and Rasdan's faces. "Actually, we didn't know. Our friend Galena was forcibly taken as well. And while I'm not wholly certain these creatures will lead us to the one responsible-"
"Of course they will!" Mertensia said in a huff. "Those little gremlins found you too, didn't they? Clearly they're all working for the horrible bastard that kidnapped my brother, and terrified poor Cleria here out of her wits!"
At the mention of her name, Cleria began crying. "It's all my fault!" she wailed. "I only turned my back for a second, and then-"
Cobalt pulled Cleria to her side, comforting her as she broke down
"Nonsense, Cleria!" Mertensia said. "You are not to blame for any of this! If you had tried to take on that nasty brute by yourself, he would have - oh gods, I can't imagine." She shuddered before continuing. "Really dear, I don't know why you insisted on coming. It's perfectly safe back in town."
"...I had to," Cleria mumbled softly.
"I don't see...oh, whatever, we've no time to argue. Now, you there," she said, turning back to address Erelin and Rasdan, "The same fiend that took my brother absconded with your friend as well, correct?"
Erelin hemmed a bit. "I'm assuming so, since we're both pursuing the same creatures. But just so we're clear, what did the kidnapper look like?"
Cleria shivered violently at the memory. "Tall. Dark Mahar. The cruelest smile I've ever seen. And he carried a huge barbed sword, and had so many of those...things...with him."
"Yep. Same guy," Rasdan confirmed with a single nod. "For what it's worth, Cleria, you were wise not to fight him. If I'm right about who he is - or even if I'm not, for that matter - he's no joke. We tried to battle him and-"
"Wait, you know him?" Cobalt interrupted.
"I think I know," Rasdan clarified. He began to trot away. "Actually, I'll explain on the way. We'd better move. IF I'm right, your brother and Erelin's friend are in more danger than we can fathom."
