It all started with Zena. She was the very first cat I ever had in my life. And she was such a good one. A brown marble tabby that I adopted at 8 weeks old from a farmer, she had a bit of a wild streak as a kitten, but she was always a good girl. I will always credit her with getting me hooked on cats. She was absolutely wonderful and basically saved my life through some hard school years. I lost her at only 13 years old to bone cancer, but I will never forget my first girl.

My second cat was Holly. As her name suggests, she was a Christmas gift. The best Christmas gift ever. She was a brown tabby who I adopted from a humane society at about 8 weeks old. She was such a stripey little thing. So smart and very well-behaved. She never had a mean 'word' for anyone. She always knew when I was upset and would comfort me just by being near me. I lost her to heart failure at about 12 years old. I will never forget my stripey baby.

While I still had both Zena and Holly, we moved to a new town and early on in our first spring in our new home, a feral cat we named Smokey had two kittens under the shed in our backyard. We named the kittens Gracie and Blackie. Smokey never got closer than a few feet from us when we'd feed them, but we got really close with Gracie and Blackie. We had the two of them and their mama fixed through a charity program. We build them a little insulated house (although mama always preferred staying under the shed) and had a three-season room with a cat door they could go into to stay warm. They even had a heating blanket in the winter. Smokey stopped showing up to feeding time after a few years, and then Gracie stopped showing up a a few years after her mama. We don't know what happened to them. After we'd been in that house 12 years, we ended up moving and brought Blackie to friends who had barns and a small farm. I don't know what happened to her after that as we lost touch with those friends. Even though the three of them were a feral colony, I will always think of them as 'my' cats. They were good babies.

Although he was only with us for no more than a month, I have to mention Tiger. He was a fluffy brown and white tabby boy who showed up one day in our backyard. But our current ferals (Smokey, Gracie, and Blackie) were very upset by him so we had to rehome him to a farm. He was such a sweet boy, always greeting me when I went outside.

Emma is one of my current cats. She is a grey and white baby, white paws, floofy white belly, probably part Russian Blue. She has the softest fur you've ever felt. She sleeps with me every night and cleans my forehead before we go to sleep. She's a very smart cat, but a princess and will not poop in the box unless it is pristine. She loves hanging out on the porch although she is an indoor cat. I got her when she was a tiny kitten who was found in a box with her siblings, abandoned. I'm her mama now and I am sure glad I am. I've never been closer with a kitty than Em. She's my baby girl.

Ben is my newest kitty. He's the first boy I've really had, not counting Tiger who wasn't really mine. Ben Ben is all black except for a small white patch on his chest and white near his bits. We call him our house panther. He was the runt of his litter - looked like a much younger kitten when I adopted him at 9 or 10 weeks old. His siblings were twice his size. He had some health troubles at first, but he's doing fine now. His very favorite things are food, the little plastic rings from bottles, food, sleeping, and food. He's absolutely adorable and I'm glad he's my son.
