The ocean was angry. That much the sailors, fishermen, and activists could all agree upon. But other than that, no one could agree on what was causing some ships to suddenly go down while others no more than a nautical mile away stayed untouched. There wouldn't be a storm in sight, nothing on the radar, but all of a sudden the waves would kick up, fog would blow in, crashes and screams would be heard, and then all just as quickly as it came, the fog would lift to reveal a quiet sea, the ill-fated ship nowhere in sight. A few claimed to have seen the form of a large, black whale swimming nearby. Of course, the ships that met their watery grave were all whalers and illegal fishermen...the ones who were unharmed were the activists' ships and those who respected the sea. Activist groups called it karma, with barely controlled grim smiles, pleased that the ocean was safer for its inhabitants, while still somewhat mournful of the loss of human life. The fishermen and whalers, well, they began to drift off and find other employment, away from the sea. The ocean was not to be messed with and seemed to be protecting what was rightfully hers.
