Mattias' golden eyes were sharp as he sighted the target through his scope. A quick trigger pull later, his shot sliced through the paper target on the hay bale set up by his father. Mattias let out a satisfied huff. His crossbow was his weapon of choice, along with different blades, where his father had preferred guns. He could always make more bolts for the bow or sharpen his blades, but there might not always be bullets at hand. He glanced back at the house, realizing he should probably get back and go through his stores to make sure everything was in order. His father would have been pleased he was keeping up with things. The older man had died five years past in a car accident, coming back from a supply run to town on a rainy evening. His mother died only last year after contracting a virus that they thought may have been the end they were preparing for. It turned out it was only the untimely end of his mom though. So now Mattias was on his own. He still kept up with his training - weapons, hand-to-hand, tracking, and other useful skills. He still planted and kept up the garden and kept the homestead neat and running well. His parents would have been proud of the rain catchment system he put in last month, to add to the water they gained from the stream system. He also upgraded the batteries for both the solar and wind power systems. Things were going very well for the young man, for all that it was lonely sometimes. The only folks he really associated with were a couple of neighbors who were like-minded in prepping and the shopkeepers he bought supplies from in town once in a long while. But he felt like it was worth it, to keep up with the life his parents so believed in. He felt like being prepared was worth anything because you never knew what was coming around the corner.
