One time, a rather drunk pirate accidentally chucked the treasure he'd found that day overboard, much to the consternation of his captain, who was just getting ready to make the poor sucker jump in to find it. Just as the captain had the sailor at sword point, a large head breached the waters and put its front feet (yes, feet) up on the edge of the ship, startling the poor pirates out of their boots. Before they could attack or yell or even drink another swallow of rum, the creature opened its mouth and dropped a pile of golden coins and jewels on the deck.
"You dropped this! It's yours, yes?" Kohola asked, tilting his head to gaze at the shocked pirates. "It wasn't what you normally drop overboard - food - so I thought I'd bring it back up here. It looks important."
After the pirates got over their shock, their captain, a large archan, answered. "Yes, yes that's the treasure this idiot dropped overboard. You saved him from walking the plank, my large friend!" The captain chuckled as he smacked the sailor on the back of his head.
The pirates shared their meal with Kohola that night and they chatted about their travels and treasure finds with him. It all sounded like an excellent adventure to the young whale creature who'd never really left the small bay he lived in. The captain was so pleased at getting the priceless treasure back, that he offered Kohola a spot on his crew.
"Don't think you'd fit 'ere on the ship, but I'd imagine ye swim well enough, yeah? Ye could fin' the treasure for us and by the size a ye, protect us too! Whaddya think?" Kohola didn't think long on it before accepting. These were the right sort of pirates - not the kind that murder, pillage, and all other manner of bad things. They only recovered lost treasure from the ocean floor and even got it back to its owner if it had any - with a finder's fee of course. This was just the sort of thing Kohola thought he was meant for and he couldn't wait to begin!
Kohola's name means 'whale' in Hawaiian - original, I know.
