"Now I see fire, inside the mountain
I see fire, burning the trees
And I see fire, hollowing souls
And I see fire, blood in the breeze
And I hope that you'll remember me."
I See Fire - Ed Sheeran

It was so, so hot. Blistering heat spread by relentless wind. Embers in the air set anything remotely dry alight within seconds. Flames seemed to eat at the very ground itself, cooking trees to their roots. The wildlife and humans alike ran as fast as they could, leaving behind their homes and everything they had. Thick smoke and air heavy with fear and soot made the going hard. A small giraffe lost track of his mother, the billows of smoke and ash blinding him. He called out for her, but the roar of the fire was like a live thing, blocking out all but its ravenous hunger. The little calf didn't know which way to go, and he was getting so tired. Maybe just a quick rest against a tree. He lay down and closed his eyes.

Hours later, fire crews came through the area, looking for survivors and ready to drown any hot spots left over from the intense wildfire. They came upon a burned tree that still had flames on the upper branches. It looked like maybe some sort of animal had been resting at its base. They shook their heads sadly, one muttering a quick prayer. The fire had no heart, no care for the lives it took. It was merciless.

Upon seeing the little giraffe's eyes open and settle upon her, the fairy smiled gently. "I shall call you Blaze, for it is through the fire that you have been reborn. Blaze, I have a choice for you, if you're willing to listen, or you may simply travel on to the paradise that awaits all who have passed. You should know that your mother and siblings survived. They are safe."

The fairy with wings of flame explained that because he had died so young and in such a horrible way, that she had the power to give him a new life. But it would be a life with a certain purpose. Because he had been unable to make it out of the flames, she would give him the power over flames. He would be tasked with saving animals and humans from wildfires around the globe. Where there was a fire, he could travel immediately. He would not, however, be able to reveal himself to his family. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, easy now that the air was sweet and not choked with acrid fumes. He looked up at the fairy and nodded. With a wave of her hand, golden wings appeared on his back and shimmering flames danced over his body which looked as if lava flowed just under his skin. Although he was still sad about not being able to talk to his family and let them know that he was, in a way, alright, he was glad to have a chance to do something so that maybe another like him would not have to suffer.
