Ghost was born during a howling sandstorm in the middle of a hot desert night. His colors, muted, so unlike the bright hues of the others in the herd, seemed to bode bad tidings for the young neela. He did not cry at birth, did not make any noise at all, not even as his mother passed bearing him. His father did not know what to make of him, the other younglings were outright mean to him, and most looked the other way when he was around. Most expected nothing of him and treated him like nothing. However, the herd leader's mate took a liking to the young boy. It was she who gave the idea to make him into a messenger. Messengers were prized in the Sacred Lands for their speed and most of all, their ability to withstand the desert's harshness. The rest of the herd thought it was a crazy idea - only the strongest became messengers and Ghost was a skinny little nothing. But the idea took with the leader, who always had an eye for how things would turn out, and Ghost began training.

Years of hard training passed and it looked like the herd leader was right. Ghost had grown into a lithe, fit, well-sized neela, and he was fast. Very fast. He could run from the herd's lands to the souk in under 20 minutes without breaking a sweat. Some whispered that he was touched by the sandstorm he was born during. He had the speed of a desert tempest and the endurance to match. Ghost also had something the other messengers didn't - he'd trained a young scrub jay to act as a lookout, to warn him of upcoming obstacles. Between his speed, endurance, and the help of the bird, Ghost was unstoppable. Soon, he gained the respect he sorely lacked from childhood. Herd members nodded as he passed, greeting him. Even those in the city knew who he was, and before long, he was offered a position as a Saheric messenger, something offered only to the fastest. His herd was proud...but more importantly, Ghost was proud of himself.
