To say Iris had a rough start was probably the understatement of the year. When she was four, her father left the family for a younger woman. A year later, her mother, having fallen into a deep depression from her father leaving, overdosed on painkillers. Iris' only remaining family was her grandmother. Her grandmother was stern, but she didn't really pay much attention to the girl, resenting having a take care of a child at her advanced age. When Iris was 12, she began sneaking out at night to meet up with friends, and they would get into all kinds of trouble together - drinking, trying drugs, skateboarding, and Iris' favorite, graffiti. From time to time, Iris would get caught and the cops would drag her home to her grandmother, a lecture, and no dinner that night (or no breakfast that morning, depending on the time of day). None of this made any impression on the angry young girl and by the time she was 17, she'd been caught a good dozen more times, for smoking pot and defacing public property, mostly.

It was the last time Iris got caught that things finally began to turn a corner for the better. The cop sat the moody teenager down on her front stoop and they had a long talk, mostly about how Iris would soon be 18, an adult, and if she kept going the way she was going, she was going to end up in prison, or worse. This cop wasn't like the others. For one thing, she was a fellow woman, and she also talked to Iris like a human being, not some bratty kid. She recommended a program for wayward teens, something she thought might pique the girl's curiosity - a painting class meant to help the kids get their emotions out in a safe way. Iris rolled her eyes at the suggestion of course, but inside, she was interested - not about the emotion crap, but about the painting.

A year later, and Iris had taken every single class the program had to offer on painting and a few others at the local college. It seemed she had a real knack for painting - not just the graffiti she used to get in trouble for. Painting seemed to be the perfect outlet for her. She gravitated towards colors and styles that imitated the street art she used to make - acrylic paints, bright colors, and a more modern style. Her goal before had just been to get through the days, but, every once in a while she imagined something greater for herself, maybe...maybe one day she could even show her work in Delphi, at the Museum of Modern Art. She'd think that and shake her head, smiling. She sure was a different person now, a better one even...maybe some day, her dream could even come true.
