Tennessine, formerly a common kerubi named River. Xe and I are close; we've been together for years, and xe hardly leaves my side. You can imagine xe was less than pleased when I switched from a part-time job at the Delphi aquarium to a full-time job in Euclid's lab. The move to the Southern Continent must've caused enough stress that xir separation anxiety went through the roof; xe always managed to find xir way out of the house and follow me to work. I tried all sorts of tricks -- locking the doors and windows, putting up baby gates, leaving out treats and a dust bath -- anything that I or anyone else could think of, but that didn't stop xem. Without fail, within 30 minutes of the start of my shift, there xe was, rushing over and scampering up onto my shoulder. Eventually, I resigned myself to bringing xem with me intentionally (partially because I found the hole xe had made in the closet wall). It didn't take long for us all to adapt. Xe grew close to Euclid, and even his serpentine companion, despite xir initial apprehension.

River, playful as xe was (well, is), had grown brave enough that xir curiosity got the best of xem. The Ultimate Pet Zapper was just so strange and enticing, now that it wasn't quite so scary. I can't tell you how many times I had to snatch xer up and remind xer to stay away. But xe's as stubborn as xe is troublesome, and one day, of course, the inevitable happened. Xe pounced into the ray's beam at just the right (wrong) time, and before xe hit the ground, xe was black and green. I rushed over as soon as it was safe, picked xem up and cradled xem in my arms. I pet xem called xir name until, finally, xir eyes eased open. Once a vibrant violet, they now glowed an electric blue. Any shock I might've felt was overshadowed by overwhelming relief -- there xe was, alive and well. I squeezed xem close to my chest, fighting back the prickling in my eyes. I only stopped when Euclid reminded me that, realistically, I shouldn't get *too* close to xem anymore.

Xir name remained River for another week or two. Euclid had been researching Tennessine, a man-made radioactive element, synthesized via beam -- a name which he floated one day, when I remarked to Euclid that "River" just didn't seem right anymore, between our banter and his genuine questions about xir well-being. I turned to xem, and xir ears perked up when I tested the new name. Xe's been Tennessine (well, Tenny, unless she's in trouble) ever since. Xe still comes to work with me every day. Xe seems to have a healthy respect for the Zapper now, and xe keeps a wide berth -- but xe's more than happy to jump up onto the lab bench and knock over my experiments whenever I'm a little too focused. Euclid keeps reminding me of the dangers of radiation whenever I love on her, but how can I say no to that face?
