Grayve is a "soul gardener," using souls taken from the Sinful as fertilizer for the forest in an attempt to stabilize its rapidly decaying magic. Though ultimately unsuccessful, her efforts have slowed the decay. However, it has been 300 years, and the forest is on its final, fatal decline. When souls no longer maintain the Vale of Hungry Shadows, she knows the madness will unleash the evil, decaying magic upon the town, killing and corrupting the residents. Then the magic will rot and collapse into nothing, leaving the forest completely without magic, and leaving the residents of the town to a final, lingering death.
Grayve is one of the few creatures left from the forest that can be considered good, even if she must make these hard choices and do this gruesome task. One of the few creatures left who is not hostile toward the living.
Grayve has a companion in this duty to protect the town: Seberus the Graveyard Ruffie.
