Life Excerpt

It was a beautiful day for a stroll in the forest. The birds were singing and the sun shining. Anduin felt relaxed for the first time in a very long time. But it wasn’t just the surroundings that were calming for him. It was also the company. He turned his head slightly so that he could see the person next to him a bit more. He was slightly taller than Anduin, with dark wavy hair that reached just below the shoulders, and a nicely kept beard that was just as dark. His skin had the color of light chocolate, and his eyes a red glow to them. He was a proud man, which was evident in how he dressed and how he moved. And why wouldn’t he be proud? He was a dragon, and a prince, after all. As if he could sense that Anduin was looking at him, Wrathion turned his head to look at him.
”Something wrong, Anduin?” There was a slight smile on his lips as he asked his question, and a hint of amusement in his voice. Anduin smiled back, closed his eyes for a moment and shook his head.
    ”No, nothing’s wrong.”
”Just enjoying the view then?” Anduin could feel his face getting hotter, and his smile grew bigger.
”Something like that.” Anduin shifted his gaze to look out into the forest before adding. “I wanted to thank you.” Wrathion raised an eyebrow.
    ”Thank me? For what?”
”For getting me out of the keep.” He chuckled a little. “Out of the city. Lately...it has felt more like a prison than a home. With everything that has happened I...” He could feel an all too familiar pain in his chest. “...I feel as though I never have any time to contemplate or...or even mourn. Despite everything I said and...did when you walked back into my life I...I want you to know that...” Before he could finish that sentence Wrathion stopped in his tracks, gently grabbed Anduin’s arm to make him stop as well, and then backed the young king up against a tree and kissed him. It helped to wash away the pain in Anduin’s chest and he felt happy again. With one hand on Wrathion’s back, the other was at the back of the young dragon’s neck, nestled in his beautiful hair. When their lips parted Wrathion leaned his head forward so that their foreheads touched.
”I know, my king...” Anduin couldn’t help but smile. Ever since Wrathion came back into his life and they’d ended up confessing how they felt about each other Wrathion had made that a kind of pet name for him. And the way he’d said it now made the young king feel warm inside. Anduin leaned his head up and initiated another kiss. They were so focused on each other that they didn’t notice that the bird song had stopped. A group of men approached them from behind. Their leader cocked his head to the side and observed the couple for a few seconds before speaking up.
”Well, well, well. What do we have here?” Just as he uttered the first word Wrathion had spun around and firmly placed himself between the men and Anduin, to protect the person that meant the world to him. “Looks like we just found ourselves a major payday, boys. That mongrel back in Stormwind will pay handsomely to get his little boy king back. In one piece.” The other men snickered in response. “And all we need to do is get this...dark fella out of the way. For good.” Wrathion gave them an almost sinister looking lopsided grin and let out a low laughter. The bandits looked a bit confused at his merriment.
”You think that the likes of you can take me out? You lowlives have absolutely no idea who you’re dealing with, do you?” Anduin shifted behind him and laid a hand on Wrathion’s shoulder.
”There’s no need for that. We don’t need to fight them...” But it was falling on deaf ears at this point. The bandit leader looked to each side of him as if to check in with his men, then looked back at Wrathion.
”Well, looks to me like you’re just some lover boy of the young king there. And um...vastly outnumbered.” Wrathion raised an eyebrow.
    ”Outnumbered, you say?”
”Last time I checked fifteen trumps one, idiot.” A big grin spread on Wrathion’s face as he took a couple of steps forward.
”Personally, I think your math is flawed.” A moment later there was no longer a handsome dark haired young man standing between the bandits and the young king, but a big black drake. With a, now, much lower voice he added “I would rethink my current situation if I were you.” All but the bandit leader looked scared. Instead of cowering he ordered his men to attack, but the men didn’t budge. The black drake smiled again. “Looks like you’re alone in this now.”
”You’re not gonna stand between me and my gold, you winged lizard!” And then he charged forward on his own. Wrathion simply lowered his head a little and then he let out a small burst of fire from his mouth. Just enough to set the man ablaze, without endangering the surrounding forest. As their leader burned to death the other bandits turned around and ran off into the woods. Once they were out of sight Wrathion returned himself to his human form. With a last glance at the burnt corpse in front of him he turned around to once again focus on Anduin.
”Are you alright?” Anduin had his eyes closed and head bent. He let out a heavy sigh before meeting Wrathion’s gaze.
”He didn’t have to die.” Wrathion gave him a small smile before closing the distance between them and embracing his lover.
”You know I don’t agree with that. Not when the one I love is threatened.” Anduin couldn’t help but smile. Then the young dragon started kissing him gently and soon the bandits were no longer on either of their minds. But then their kissing was interrupted when Wrathion felt a sudden pain in his back. As he turned around to face his attacker Anduin could see that there was an arrow stuck in the right side of the young dragon’s back. As Wrathion once again turned into his drake form and started going after the bandits that had returned to avenge their fallen leader, Anduin saw the arrow break off as the drake moved to intercept the bandits that were running towards him. Then arms suddenly grabbed Anduin from behind and he found himself struggling to get loose. After what felt like an eternity, but was probably more like a few minutes, of struggle he managed to get out of the grip he was in, but in the process he lost his balance and fell, hitting his forehead on a rock on the ground. He lost consciousness and the next thing he was aware of was feeling someone gently turning him over and holding him close. Then he heard Wrathion’s concerned voice.
”Anduin! Are you okay? By the Light, this is bad...” Anduin opened his eyes and saw the worried face of his lover above his own. The young dragon hadn’t noticed though because he was looking around the place they were in, probably making sure no more bandits were around. Anduin brought a hand up and touched Wrathion’s cheek. At once those red eyes looked down at him. “Anduin...” The young king gave him a weak smile.
”Genn’s gonna kill you.” That brought a smile to Wrathion’s handsome face and he chuckled.
”I guess I’ll just have to hope that my king will protect me.” He caressed Anduin’s cheek. He then looked up slightly, at Anduin’s forehead. “You took a nasty hit there. Do...do you think you could heal yourself?” His question made Anduin remember that his friend had been shot. He shook his head.
”I could but your injury is worse than mine...”
”You’re the king. You are more important. Not just to me, but to this whole kingdom.” He kissed the king’s forehead. “Besides, I can still fly us back to Stormwind in my condition.” Realizing that there was no point in continuing the discussion Anduin agreed with the Black Prince and healed himself.

As Wrathion landed in the garden of Stormwind Keep he almost immediately changed into his human form. His complexion was lighter than usual and his breathing heavier as the two of them made their way into the throne room. As soon as Genn saw them he noticed the blood on Anduin’s clothes. He rushed over to the young king as he looked at Wrathion with clear anger on his face.
”You said you would protect him! I should have known we couldn’t trust your word! Never trust a black dra...” Anduin stopped his outburst.
”Genn! Stop it! The blood isn’t mine, it’s his!” Just then Wrathion collapsed behind them. Velen, who had been calmly walking over to them, reached them and knelt down next to the young dragon. As he started healing him he looked at Anduin with his usual calm expression.
”He has lost a lot of blood, your majesty.” Anduin knelt down on the other side of his friend.
”But you can heal him, can’t you?” Velen nodded.
”Of course. But he will still need to rest. Not even a dragon can go on as normal after losing so much.” From behind them they could hear one of the characteristically grumpy sounding snorts from Genn Greymane.
”Move over.” As Velen got up and moved out of the way Genn walked over to Wrathion, bent down and scooped him up into his arms and started walking in the direction of Anduin’s personal chambers. The young king got up and followed the Gilnean king.

After placing Wrathion on the bed, Genn started to walk towards the door. Anduin stepped forward and placed a hand on his arm to make him stop, which he did. The young king looked at his advisor and gave him a genuine smile.
”Thank you, Genn.” Letting out another one of his grumpy sounding snorts, the older king turned his head to look over at the sleeping dragon.
”You know that I don’t approve of your...relation, Anduin. But your father was a close friend to me. He was...like family.” There was a profound sadness in his eyes and demeanor at the mention of family. Anduin couldn’t blame him. He’d lost so much. But more than anything Anduin knew how much losing his son, Liam, had affected his fellow king. “And so are you.” Anduin smiled as Genn continued. “I love you like you were...my own son. And I want you to be happy.”
”I know, Genn. And you mean a lot to me too.”
”I’ll...try to be more...accepting of him. But I am not going to let the matter go, of you needing an heir. As much as you might love Wrathion, he can’t give you that.” Anduin let out a heavy sigh.
”I know that. But I want to be allowed to be happy. For as long as I can...”
