Chime was created to be a very young girl's companion; to keep the child company when her parents were away on their many business trips. Gifted with an internal set of bells that could be chimed to mimic any tune after hearing it only once, the celinox would play their little girl to sleep when she was lonely, or play happy tunes for her to dance to. "Make her happy" was their prime directive, and so they did.
But the girl started to grow up, as all children eventually do. She didn't care as much for her old toy. Chime was put in a closet, brought out only when the girl was feeling particularly nostalgic every few months. Then, not at all. Dust collected on them, and they wondered, "What have I done wrong? Did I not make you happy enough?" Eventually, they decided they had to do something to make this right. So, disobeying their orders to stay in the closet, Chime went after their girl. They followed in secret for a time, learning the new songs she liked, seeing her teenage games. Then, they approached her, playing the songs and trying to engage with her. They could not speak, except with their music box, but if they could have, they would have asked, "Am I doing it right? Is this how I make you happy?"
Embarrassed, the girl yelled at the toy. She said it was just an old piece of junk for a kid, and she wasn't a kid anymore, so she didn't want it around when it just humiliated her. Shattered, Chime ran away.
What good is a toy that can't even make their child happy? Should I find a new child? But they will only grow up and come to hate me too.
