The Echo of a Ghost

Ms. Margaret Fox, 1878

She stands, proud and confident to the brim, as she spreads her arms to the audience before her. Her peacock robes drape from her body like a queen, her staff glowing with all the possibilities of magic. A hush falls over the crowd as she begins to speak.

“Ladies and gentlemen! For centuries, we have been plagued by ghosts and spirits! They haunt us in our sleep and they come to us in our waking moments. The specters that lurk within our society are a dark force that must be reckoned with. And yet, for all this time, we have been unable to...”

She pauses for dramatic effect, gazing intently at the crowd before her.

A small child in the front row begins to cry out at the sight of her face melting into their mother’s for a moment, who hushes him quickly. The woman smiles at them maliciously, relishing in their fear as she goes on. “We have been unable to understand what these spirits want from us! Are they here to take us away? To draw us down into their depths and never let us return?

Now I am telling you from experience that this is not true! I was once like you—a skeptic against the paranormal world. But no more! I have seen it with my own eyes and felt it with my own flesh; there is nothing more terrifying than the things that lurk just outside of human perception."

The woman pauses again, letting the statement hang in the air a few moments before answering it herself. “To show you things no human eye has ever seen before! I am but an instrument through which they can communicate with you—”

The woman suddenly screams as her body is overtaken by a violent shudder. Her skin begins to bubble and pull away from the muscle beneath it, forming into a thick, viscous layer that covers her entire body.

The crowd gasps in horror, the boy at the front starts crying out again. The woman’s body liquefies completely, and she falls to the ground in a gurgling heap of flesh and bone. The liquid begins to slowly recede back into her body, leaving nothing but an empty shell covered with a thin layer of transparent skin that shimmers and reflects light like water.

The woman’s body begins to reform into its original shape once more.

"I... I'm too tired to continue." Her face has grown pale and she suddenly stumbles off the stage, "Come back tomorrow night!" She yells out, dipping behind the curtain.

Another woman met her there, "Did you like what I did with the mirrors? It looked real, didn't it? We'll charge more tomorrow night."

Margaret scowls, "We've gone too far." Her hands patted away invisible dust on her dress, "I'm out. I'm going to tell them all about the faked seances, possessions. It's not real, none of it is."

The woman grinned, "No, you're right dear. But mull it over, I'll bring by some tea, we can tell them tomorrow night."

---

The next night all Maragret could think while she watched the other woman go through the same spiel, was that if ghosts were actually real, why had they been faking it all along? Her feet floated a few inches off the ground, her semi-transparent face forming a scowl. She'd been a much more entertaining actress.
