When the world finally cracked, spewing fire and hell, no one was prepared. The demons, long satisfied with their dominion under the surface, suddenly craved more. And so more they took.

Humans were no match for the brute, cunning strength of the beasts, fueled by fire and brimstone, and society fell, fast, to their whims. The demons took the land they wanted and ravaged what they didn't. Entire villages were torn to ruin, while larger cities became the demons' preferred habitat. Resilient as ever, humans were forced to start anew, and cropped up in small communities, often within the destroyed towns and villages.

Within these communes, droves of self-proclaimed demon hunters appeared.

The samurai heard about this at a quiet campsite, stars and moons away from where he began. An older woman was twisting her sleeve between two thoughtful fingers while talking about witnessing a fight between man and demon, a terrible, bloody affair -- the stench of iron filled the air for miles, she said, eyes cast toward the muddy earth.
