Name: King Rorek II Valador
Age: 430 years old; looks to be in late twenties, early thirties.
Personality: Generally reserved and polite. Is impartial but not apathetic. Ruthless but not unforgiving. But when in a mood, he becomes ill-tempered, brooding, and sometimes violent.
Habits: Wandering on foot, stargazing, hoarding and collecting.
Background:
With four older brothers as well as a several thousand year old father, Rorek never expected to be king. As the hatchling of the family, he spent his days doing as he pleased whether it was "pillaging" nearby cities or tinkering with the metals buried underneath the castle.
But one day, a minor earthquake echoed through the land. When the dust settled, those near the Crater were greeted with the sight of two thousand Griffins. This herd called themselves refugees of the Below. They had flown as far and wide to find the highest mountain that would lead them to the fabled Above. They claimed to only want a place to make their own and would take any uninhabited land.
But unrest grew when winters grew longer and colder. The Dragons, hot-blooded creatures, started to feel the need to hibernate. As the oldest, the king was unable to resist the instinctive response and thus, the first to succumb. He gave his throne to his eldest.
The eldest was deadly afraid of falling to this curse as well. His paranoia led him to the Griffins. As cold-blooded creatures, the Griffins seemed to him a logical source of these bitter winters. He announced that they must have used some foreign magick to prolong the cold and worse, to topple the ruling family.
It was a declaration of war. The Griffins fought back ferociously. The dragons, whom had lived in peace for so long, could barely stand their own against the battle-scarred veterans. Fire clashed with ice for the next two centuries. One by one, his brothers fell in battle. Rorek's succession ceremony was the same day as his brother's funeral and lasted merely five minutes.
Unlike his father and brothers, Rorek was not so blind with fear. The Above was created to be the sanctuary of all creatures. He saw that the cold only spread so far to naturally meet the needs of the Griffins. The draconian home was just unfortunate enough to be resting at the edge of that area.
The war ended as the remaining dragons moved further down the land. There was no real victor--the Dragons had lost their land to the Griffins but said land was a war-torn wasteland. Though bitterness still existed amongst each group, diplomacy was reestablished and both rulers turned their attentions to rebuilding.
Present:
Almost three centuries had passed and reconstruction was complete. The borderlines were established: North of the Crater was the Griffins; South of the Crater, the Dragons. Both groups prospered and the war started to fade from their memories. Aside from stories of heroic valor and a legend of a sleeping king, few of the post-war youths grew up with reminders of war.
As for Rorek, life was not so idyll. The war had its toll. He could not enjoy simple pleasures such as flying without memories of bloodshed. He often disappears to wander on foot, to the dismay of his advisers.
Fortunately, he has picked and trained someone to take care of matters in his absence: Aislinn is his designated Head of State and has proven to be far more dependable in keeping house.
