It was a very simple operation. All he had to do was assassinate a certain high-ranking official in a corrupted government. It was nothing new to him. He’d done it many times before. The several month preparation, the constant surveillance of the target, determination of the assassination point… all routine. Yet this operation ended up being anything but ordinary.

The first thing to go wrong was the weather on the day of the assassination. It was a supposed to be a pristine day. Not a cloud in sight. Still air. But it was anything but. The clouds were considerable, the winds were gusty. There was even the occasional sprinkle. Definitely not the ideal conditions to take out a target. But none of this mattered. He was a pro. He’d still be able to take the shot and get his man.

Then it happened. He was waited at his spot long past the determined time. His target never showed. This was a first for him. With such careful and meticulous planning, this was both an unacceptable and unforgivable outcome. His mind raced. Was the target tipped off? Was my intel wrong? His thoughts quickly turned dark. Was I set up? Who set me up? In the blink of an eye, he’d made up his mind. Wrong or not, he determined that his life as a sniper was over. He had to go on the run, before he became the next target. Everyone was now the enemy. He had to escape, before he was the one gunned down. Believing himself to be in sound of mind, he swiftly left the area, disposing of anyone he deemed to be a threat.

It didn’t take long his higher ups to find out about what transpired on that day. They believed their man to have snapped and gone AWOL after having failed his first assassination attempt in his illustrious career. 23 dead, yet somehow miraculously, not a single one was an innocent bystander. They sent several men to tail him, but all of them failed. Most never returned themselves.

Deep in a forest, a man is living out his life. He has lost his sanity, but still retains his survival instincts from his days as a sniper. He believes he created an imaginary friend for himself. A large wolf, that goes by the name of Balthazar, speaks to him and laughs at his insanity. The man spends his days conversing with this wolf about days gone by.
