___Once upon a time there was a little boy, and that little boy had a twin sister named Lily.

Despite being twins, the two children were quite the opposite in many ways; Lily had fair hair like silk, baby-blue eyes, rosy cheeks, and the kind of smile that could warm even the iciest of hearts. In comparison, the boy's hair was an unruly mess of dark knots, his eyes an unsettling gray, and he scarcely ever smiled or spoke a word.

But Lily was kind, and loved her brother despite their differences, because he was the only family she had.

The boy loved Lily as well, of course. Don't all twins love each other? What Lily didn't know was that the boy was perhaps just a bit too fond of her.

He told her one day, when they were both still young but reaching that inevitable, awkward age where Lily grew and blossomed into a beautiful woman and the boy turned into a troubled young man with limbs that still felt too thin and long and gangly.

He told her, but Lily didn't understand.

It wasn't right, she said; it was abominable, and a terrible sin. It was wrong.

But how could love ever be considered wrong? He had felt this love for her for as long as he could remember -- in what way was that a sin?

They argued. Lily started to cry, and the young man grew frustrated. She wasn't listening, she was being so loud, all that screaming and wailing and trying to run away.

So he silenced her.

That way, he could talk, and she could not interrupt with her sobbing and her tears. He would tell her anything and everything, and she would listen.

The twins had always shared a fondness for flowers, so the young man thought it fitting to keep Lily in the garden. He would bring her new flowers and tend to them with the best of care, and she would remain beautiful forever.

But more importantly, she would be his.
