It was a cool evening in October and the wind blew leaves and bits of trash in every direction. Dodging cars and shopping carts the young tawny kitten only sought out one thing. Protection. Cars honked and people yelled obscenities but no one stopped to investigate the tiny being who fled back and forth, paws caked with dirt and sore from pebbles and bits of shattered glass. She dodged one last time, barely getting out of the way and finally stood still, bewildered and exhausted. There wasn't any hope and she knew it.

Before she could lay down in the road she heard a coaxing voice. "Mew, mew. Here Kitty!" Her head perked up at the sound, the vocalizations so different from the others she endured all day. Curious she stood up and began to trot over. The wind picked up, blowing the sound in different directions but she held fast, her little legs working as fast as they could. Suddenly she was in the air, warm hands holding her securely, a gentle voice calling to her and soft lips kissing her dirty head and ears.

The ride home was a bit unnerving, instead of dodging a car she was in one. She couldn't stop pacing, back and forth, her little legs stretched to their limits as she tried to peer out the window. When the car finally stopped she was cradled again, held firmly in her new owners arms. She snuggled down against the warmth and listenend to the sound of the girl's heart. It thumped in time with the gentle strokes she was recieving and made her so happy she fell asleep.

When she woke later there was food and warm blankets and a new mousey toy to play with. Everything was so exciting. After several mouthfulls of food and some water she batted around the mouse and looked up lovingly at her new mom. There was a laugh. "You are such a sweetie pie!" More snuggles and then a pause. "But you sure are dirty!"

The bath was quite an ordeal and all throughout the indignity she cried out, protesting this horrible treatment. Her frowns and cries finally seemed to take effect because she was lifted from the dreaded water and wrapped in a towel, friction applied until her fur began to poof again. Once released she ran to hide under the table in order to lick herself and regain some of her dignity. Eventually she noticed how nice she smelled and how the black filth of the road was out of her paws and her fur. Maybe the bath had done some good. She crept out from under the chair and was rewarded with pets and tickles and more kisses on her face.

"I think I will name you Ginger Snap."

Life was pleasant and happy for quite some time and her fear melted into the happiness you can only experience when you are loved. She loved to sleep on her mama's bed and share her toy mouse with her new brother, who was quite a bit older than her, but polite and protective. Her other brother, the white one, was hostile to her, but he hid in the garage most of the time, so Ginger Snap rarely had to worry about him picking on her.

It was getting colder and one night her mama's parents picked her up and took her in the car. Her ears perked as they got closer to where her mama was. The ride in the car was scary, but as long as she got to see mama it was going to be ok. When the car stopped her grandpa picked her up and petted her ears, cooing to her. It was cold and dark and there were cars zooming past in the street. The sound scared her and she hunkered down. Suddenly a large truck drove past where they stood and her heart exploded with fear. It was like the old place! She had to find mama. She tried to break free, scratching and clawing, her mind wild with fear. MAMA!

It was cold and the wind blew briskly. Gingersnap could hear her mama's voice.

"You did what? Did you even look for her?"

Her ears perked up. Mama was going to come and get her! She meowed and crept forward from the bush she was under. 'Mama, here I am!' She saw her mother walk past, hands clasped together so tightly that her fingers were white. Her grandpa followed closely behind, his arms and shirt covered in bright red blood. She looked at her paws. Blood? Her claws were red, bits of flesh clinging to them. There was blood in her fur. Had she hurt her grandpa? Suddenly there was her mama, looking right at her. No recognition on her face, no joy in her voice.

"She couldn't have gone out into the street could she?" There was a sudden cry of anguish. "She would have been killed!" The frantic searching continued and Gingersnap lost all fear, dashing out into the car park and bumping her head into her mama's leg. 'Here I am mama! Here I am!' Her mother shivered and folded her arms against her chest. Horrified at her mother's rejection Gingersnap slunk back into the bushes, a keening yowl coming from deep within her.

Suddenly she felt a paw on her flank and turned to defend herself. The flashing red eyes caught her off guard. There were three cats sitting in the dark, their fur so black the only thing she could make out were there luminescent eyes.

"Your mother can't hear you now Gingersnap. You're one of us."

Even though her heart was exploding with questions, she heard the truth in the leader's voice.

"Where will I go?" She asked timidly. The lead cat guided her chin up so that she met his gaze.

"You come with us little one. To the council of the Misfortunat. From there you will be given a new purpose."

It was then that the leader let out a mournful yowl, the other two cats following suit. Gingersnap understood this was to be her goodbye to her mother and cried as loud as she could.

The only thing her mother heard was the howling of the wind.
