Kes was very nervous, she was on her way to meet a group of people she had never met before. They were supposedly people experienced in psychic phenomena. The leader of the group was Ryan, a young man with dark, piercing eyes. Kes had been invited to meet them after a friend of hers had mentioned her possible 'gift'. She wasn't convinced there was anything special about her but had been persuaded to go meet them anyway.

The diner they had arranged to meet in was only a few minutes away from the station, so it didn't take long after the 20 minute train journey for Kes to arrive. She crossed the street and went to enter the diner. As she was about to close the door behind her she noticed an elderly man coming towards the door - so she waited and held the door open for him, gesturing that he should come in. He took his seat in the corner, while Kes looked around and quickly saw a group of 4 people sitting together by the window. A man rose and welcome Kes, introducing himself as Ryan, and his friends Anna, Tom and Matt.

Kes took a seat and fidgeted nervously with her hair. Ryan looked at her intensely and asked 'I want you to look around the diner, slowly, and tell me who you see. Don't make eye contact with anyone - just describe them'. Kes was a little taken aback by his odd request, but felt like she should do as he asked. She carefully looked around and said 'I see the waitress behind the counter, blonde hair...I see the chef in the corner on the telephone...and the old man in the corner...and a middle aged couple by the other window..and a young man sitting near to the door.

Ryan smiled and looked at his friends. They looked at him, waiting for a response. He said 'Ok, let's go.' They all got up to leave, Kes was unsure what to do. Ryan told her to follow them outside, where they headed towards their station wagon. Ryan turned to Kes and said 'I knew when you came in the diner there was something not quite right. You looked as if you held the door open for someone?' Kes nodded, completely baffled by what was going on. Ryan continued 'I asked you to look around and tell me who you saw. We all saw everyone too, except for the old man. There was no old man, no-one sitting in the corner at all. No-one came in the door when you held it open'...

Kes could feel her heart pumping hard in her chest. She looked at the group and they shuffled their feet and tried not to look excited. Ryan took Kes' hand and told her they needed to help her discover more about her gift. Seeing ghosts is not something that happens everyday. She needed to learn how to use it, how to understand what she could do. He asked her to accompany them to their office, so they could talk and plan what to do next. He explained it was an exciting discovery, and something she should embrace.

Kes gently pulled her hand away and shook her head. She told the group she wasn't interested in their offer - but thanked them for their time. They looked stunned, disappointed. Ryan started to speak but Kes cut him off and turned away to go back in the diner. She needed a strong cup of coffee. Entering the diner, she chose her seat - at the table with the old man. He was smiling at her. 'You did the right thing Kes. They weren't interested in helping you, they wanted to use you to promote their 'psychic group' and make a name for themselves in the media. I am happy you could see through them'.

Kes laughed, probably louder than she meant to - but the pun was too funny at that moment. 'Thank you, Grandad. What would I do without you watching over me? I am so lucky to still have you around no matter where I go.' The old man smiled at her, while desperately wanting to hug her - but knowing her couldn't. He knew he was not of this world anymore, but couldn't leave his dear Kes to fend for herself. With her 'gift', she was vulnerable, and he was determined to watch over her and keep her safe - forever.
