Warder - al'Lan Mandragoran

A Warder is a warrior bonded to an Aes Sedai, those who are trained to handle and use the One Power. The bonding is a thing of the One Power, and by it he gains such gifts as quick healing, the ability to go long periods without food, water or rest. So long as a Warder lives, the Aes Sedai to whom he is bonded knows he is alive however far away he is, and when he dies she will know the moment and manner of his death. When bonded, the Warder and the Aes Sedai can also feel the emotions and physical well-being of the other. This particular man, Lan, is a Warder.

al'Lan Mandragoran is from Malkier, a nation high in the north. It, along with four other nations, formed the Borderlands. These lands border the place known as the Blight. The Blight is the place affected by the Dark One, an evil being imprisoned by the Creator at the beginning of time. Beyond the Blight lies Shayol Ghul, the one place where the Dark One’s touch is strongest. Few have been to Shayol Ghul however, for one must pass through the Blight to reach it. The Blight means death to most men. Death and the Shadow, in a rotting land tainted by the Dark One’s breath, where anything at all can kill, an insect bite, the prick of the wrong thorn, the touch of a wrong leaf. Abode of Trollocs and Myddraal, creatures of the Dark One, and worse. Sadly, that nation is no more

When Lan, the son of the King of Malkier was only a babe, his nation was betrayed to the Shadow. Breyen, Lan’s aunt, was furious that her husband’s brother got the throne instead of her husband himself. When her husband died in the Blight, she blamed the King for the incident. For revenge, she plotted to seize the throne for her own son, Isam. She moved the soldiers back from the Blight to seize the Seven Towers, stripping the Borderforts to bare garrisons. Unfortunately, the one she plotted with was a darkfriend, one sworn to the Dark One, and Trollocs poured into Malkier like a flood, unhindered by the now absent soldiers. The first peal of doom for the Seven Towers had been struck.

The King had his son brought to him. There, in his cradle, he was given four gifts. The ring of the Malkieri kings, and a locket that hung around his neck, the sword on his hip, and an oath sworn in his name. The locket, containing the painted images of the mother and father Lan could not remember seeing in life, was the most precious, the oath the heaviest. “To stand against the Shadow as long as iron is hard and stone abides. To Defend the Malkieri while one drop of blood remains. To avenge what cannot be defended.” And then he had been anointed with oil and named Dai Shan, consecrated as the next King of Malkier. He was sent away from Malkier with twenty of the best fighters in the hope that he would survive. Then the King and the Malkieri rode out to fight the Shadow one last time. There they died, and the Seven Towers were broken.

Of the twenty men protecting the infant Lan, only five survived, and only one, Bukama, still lived. Nothing remained of Malkier to be defended now, only a nation to avenge and he had been trained for that from his first step. He learned weapons as other children learned toys and the Blight as others did their yard. With his mother’s gift at his throat and his father’s sword in his hand, with the ring branded on his heart he had fought from his sixteenth nameday to avenge Malkier. But never had he led men into the blight. Bukama had ridden with him, and others, but he would not lead men there. That war was his alone. The dead could not be returned to life, a land any more than a man.

In appearance he is very tall, as are most Malkieri, and muscular with broad shoulders. His hair is dark and shoulder length, held back by a hadori, a braided leather headband worn by those remaining Malkieri pledged to fight the Shadow. His face is hard and angular, his eyes an icy blue. He is a hard man, and is rather prickly, though he was good at hiding it from most people. Though he hides his emotions, he still has them. He just doesn’t let them control him - except for the times that something really startles him: then he can betray some emotion. He generally avoids Aes Sedai if possible. The hadori could be enough to attract the interest of a Sister seeking a Warder: and he had a grudge against them. When Malkier was failing, why had they, the most powerful of people, not come to aid his country? You might ask then, how he could have become a Warder to those he disliked so. Indeed, his story is an interesting one.

It starts with him fighting in the Aiel War, around the age of 26. The Aiel, fierce warriors from the great desert in the east, were invading the country of Cairhein, trying to reach and kill their king. King Laman had chopped down the sacred tree that the Aiel had given him, thinking to make it into his throne. Lan had taken some time of his personal war in the Blight to help defend Carihein. After two years of fighting, the Aiel finally managed to slay the King in his pride, and now were returning to their homes. Lan wanted to return to the Blight immediately to resume his war, but Bukama persuaded him to wait eight months. Soon, however, it was time to return. On the way they stopped at the city of Canluum.

Eventually, after finding three packed inns, Lan walked into a fourth, determined to find a place for them to sleep. When they found the innkeeper, she seemed to know Bukama and consented to give Lan a pallet and Bukama her own bed. A few moments later Lan was greeted by the only other man that Lan considered a friend, Ryne. They sat together, and after a while Ryne mentioned that Edeyne Arrel had raised the Golden Crane, the banner of Malkier, and was gathering men ready to carve Malkier out of the Blight. Incensed, Lan leaved, heading for the barn to calm down. Edeyne was his carneira, his first lover. He had been infatuated with as a young boy, but eventually he had realized that she had really wanted his power. Lan did not wish to lead hundreds of men to their pointless deaths in the Blight, but he saw no way out. Edeyne was always one to demand every right and require the smallest obligation be met. Custom tied strings to him, and whatever he chose, she would use them like a set of reins.

The next morning they rose early and waited at the gates. Strangely enough another soon joined them, a young woman, but she stayed well away. They paid her no attention, and once the dawn came, the gates opened and they set off the road towards Chachin. After a while though, they noticed that the woman was following them. They continued on until sunset then stopped. Lan and Bukama decided to separate, Ryne and Bukama continuing on, Lan going into the forest. Lan made a clear trail through the forest should the woman follow him instead, and upon reaching a pond, stopped and laid his things out. After settling, he sat cross-legged beside the pond, waiting.

Listening hard, he heard the woman come through the trees and toward him. The steps paused for a moment close behind, and suddenly his sword, lying on the ground beside him, was whisked into the air. Lan uncoiled, whirling, grabbing his sword and hurling her into the pond before she could react. As she splashed into the water, he frowned at the spot she had stood. How had she gotten his sword? He hadn’t heard nor seen her reach for it. He turned and offered a hand to her, and he saw colored stripes down her dress. A Lady. As the indignant woman took his hand she heaved hard as if to pull into the water too, but he was very strong and simply straightened easily. Kindly, he lit a fire and hung blankets to shield her as she dried herself.

After dark, Bukama and Ryne returned, and they settled down to eat. After a few moments the woman emerged from the blankets, and asked them to protect and accompany her to Chachin. She handed each of them a coin, and Lan grunted. The offer of coin to protect her was insulting, but she couldn’t know that. Later that night, when everyone else seemed to be asleep, Bukama asked Lan if he trusted her. “I’d sooner trust an Aes Sedai” Lan replied, and suddenly a great column a water rose out of the pond and crashed down upon him. Ryne awoke, shocked, and immediately suspected Shadowspawn, but the woman shouted angrily “Not Shadowspawn! It is unwise to disrespect Aes Sedai, Master Lan.” Lan just stared at her, his face unreadable.

Finally reaching Chachin, Lan left the woman gratefully. He went to the palace and got a room, courtesy of the town's lord. Almost as soon as he retired he received a note from Edeyne, summoning him to her apartments. He avoided her for most of the day, but eventually he had to come. When he did, she made him take out his daori, a long braid of his hair, made when it had been cut for the first time at age 16. When he held the daori, she had complete control over him by custom of her being his carneira. She led him to the balcony and pointed to a young woman there, her daughter Iselle, and announced her plan for her daughter to marry him. Lan gasped in shock. To marry her would be shameful, but he could see no way to stop it.

The next morning, Edeyne tied his daori to the door, trapping him in his rooms. With nothing to do but contemplate the inevitable marriage, he practiced the forms with his sword. He worked until he sweat profusely, and suddenly the strange woman from their traveling walked into his rooms, announced by the servants as Moiraine Damodred, High Lady and an Aes Sedai. Lan spun to face her. She wanted to know something but he demanded a question in return. Coldly, he asked the question that had burned him for years. Why had the Aes Sedai not come to help Malkier? She hesitated, and then replied that Aes Sedai had been sent for Malkier but hadn’t made it in time. Even Aes Sedai could not fly. He stared at her for a long moment. He believed her: he saw truth in her eyes. What she wanted in return was for him to spy on another Aes Sedai of all things, Merean. He told her that he would send Bukama to do it, for he was stuck with Edeyne for now.

Later that same day, Lan slipped out of his rooms, and sneaking into the hallways. He couldn’t be seen. He had been right. Edeyne used the daori like reins. He heard a noise and hid behind a statue. The Aes Sedai that Bukama was spying on was passing with Iselle at her heels. He waited until they were gone before continuing. As he made it to the stairs, he turned to go down it, but suddenly something grabbed his feet and pushed his back. He fell down the flight of stone stairs. At the bottom, as he was gasping for breath, a man came running for him with a message. Bukama was dead, a knife in his back. Furious he ran for Moiraine’s apartments. His fall had been caused by the one power, and only one person could have known about Bukama spying. Crashing into her rooms, he confronted her. But as he spoke, she silenced him. She had realized something. His fall and Bukama’s death had been by Merean, and others now were in danger. She abruptly told him to lead her to the Kings private balcony, were he and his son were.

When they arrived there, Lan froze, shocked. Merean had the King , his son, and Iselle bound, and beside Merean was Ryne, his friend. Merean glanced at Lan and ordered Ryne to kill him. Lan barely got his sword out in time, and they fought hard. Meanwhile, Moiraine confronted the Merean, but the latter was stronger in the Power. As Moiraine fought, Merean dropped the King and his son off the balcony to their deaths, and began to lift Edeyne’s daughter too. Suddenly, Moiraine ran forward and stabbed her. Moiraine scrambled over the other body to save the girl, who had began to fall. Moiraine grabbed her hand, but it slipped, and the girl fell too. Just then Lan dealt a killing blow to Ryne, and he cleaned and sheathed his sword, looking sadly at the man who was once his friend. Well, with Iselle dead, there was no chance of him having to marry her. A grim joke.

The next morning Lan departed from Chachin, bringing the daori with him. A little ways down the road, he went off into a field and burned the cord. No one could control him with it again. As he scooped earth over the embers, Moiraine appeared through the trees. Standing tall she asked him to be her Warder. Glancing at her Lan replied that he had his own war to fight. Looking at him she answered that she fought the same war and explained.

Months ago the Dragon had been reborn. The Dragon Reborn was the only hope to defeat the Dark One who was breaking free, and must fight him at the last battle. She was out to find him, to train him up to face the Dark One. Both of their wars involved defeating the Dark One, so they were one and the same. Lan considered this, then whirled around, and kneeling, pledged to be her Warder. She bent down and bonded him, and he suddenly could feel her emotions, a little ball in the back of his head. Her emotions were full of guilt and mourning. For the girl that had fallen. Straightening, Lan told her to say a prayer and move on. Once could not bring back the dead. She regarded him then nodded. “Where to?” he asked. “The world, if need be. We win this battle of the world dies”, she responded.

Side by side they rode down the hill and turned south. Behind them the sky rumbled and turned black, another late storm rolling down from the Blight.
