Luxury. Wealth. Fame. Charlemagne had all that anyone could ever wish for. He was prince that was to inherit the throne of a small, but strong kingdom nestled among the clouds. Charlemagne's father was a well-respected king that everyone adored in the kingdom.

"One day this kingdom will be yours, my son," the king declared to Charlemagne as they were walking down one of the corridors of the castle. It was an ornate edifice with gilded fixtures and marble floors that were cool to the touch. Charlemagne looked down at the tiles on the floor as he was walking, his eyes fixated on the small specks of gold that sparkled within the geometric patterns. Everything within the castle had some bit of gold within it.

"I know, but that still won't happen for a long time. After all, there is still so much that I need to learn," Charlemagne responded with his head still pointed towards the floor.

"Charlemagne, you are doing well with your training. Your flying has improved greatly, and you have learned so much about the laws of our king—” the king stopped mid-sentence and began to violently cough.

"Father! I'll fetch the nurse!" Charlemagne shouted and ran down the corridors to retrieve help. He felt anxiety build within him. He knew his father's days were limited, but Charlemagne did not want to accept that reality. For the next few days, the king remained in his quarters under heavy medical supervision. He had a chronic illness that continued to get worse with time. Not even the best doctors within the kingdom could find a cure for his ailment.

"Son, you know it's time. I've lived a good life, and now it's time for you to continue the legacy of our kingdom," the king weakly whispered to Charlemagne. The young prince looked back his father with tears in his eyes.

"But father! What if I fail? What if I make a wrong decision? You are a fantastic leader, and how could I possibly take your place?" Charlemagne cried. The idea of making a wrong decision or letting down his own kingdom was unbearable to him. He simply could not fail.

"My son... there is no thing as perfection. You cannot... live in fear of making mistakes. However, if your heart remains pure... like gold itself, you will not fail your kingdom," the king weakly responded to his son with a smile. He closed his eyes and his breathing finally ceased.

"Father!" Charlemagne cried again. His pained eyes looked at his father who had now peacefully passed away. It was time for Charlemagne to face the fear he had held within him so long. He was now the king.

"Are you ready, your Majesty?" the royal adviser inquired to Charlemagne as they walked toward the balcony of the front of the castle. A week had passed since the king's death, and the day of Charlemagne's coronation finally arrived.

"Yes... I am as ready as I will ever be," Charlemagne replied with a slight hesitation in his voice. He took a deep breath and stepped on the balcony.

"May we present to you the new king of our kingdom, Charlemagne!" the royal adviser announced as he placed the onyx-studded gold crown upon Charlemagne's head. Charlemagne looked out at the kingdom that lie before him. The citizens looking upon him with hope at his coronation. The newly crowned king suddenly felt a sense of pride fill within him. The people were counting on him to lead the kingdom in a positive direction.

"My people, I am ready to serve you as your king and continue to bring prosperity to our kingdom! Much like alloy that strengthens gold, you all strengthen me as king!" Charlemagne declared to his citizens. He may not always be a perfect king, but Charlemagne was going to shine like gold.
