I mean, I walk around barefoot, and I talk with my hands.
But I'm not a test subject.
Pills will not fix me. Shots, hypnotherapy, shock therapy...
It's all a load of shit.
If you want me to talk, get me a bowl of ice cream.
I reside in the beautiful gardens of a home for the mentally unstable. I'm not unstable most of the time, but my refusal to speak verbally is frightening to some, and seen as a sign of potential violence. My voice has no power, so why bother using it? Talking won't change the world, it won't make people any less revolting, so I choose not to. Because of this, my therapist, parents, and the State decided it would be best to put me here. Had I been just a few years older, I would have been able to get out of it. The gardens really are wonderful, and I have free reign of what grows and where. The big cherry tree is my favorite, I can sit in it all day towards the end of spring, and it smells wonderful. I've planted daisies below the tree, and I am careful not to step on them in bloom. If they had voices, they would scream out for people to LOOK WHERE THEY ARE STEPPING. But they always grow back. No matter how many times they are crushed by mindless human footsteps, they always grow back. Maybe I'll learn how one day.
"Rai, are you ready to talk to me today?"I laughed. My hands spat venomous words at the doctor, who just nodded as if he spoke my language."Alright Rai. Maybe another day. I see you have grown fond of another patient, you seem to communicate with him."(Yes, he is deaf, and he helps me improve my sign language. What's it to you?)The doctor just laughs. "Well, its great you have friend. You've been here quite a few months now, how are you liking it?"(This place is shit. I have scars from injections! This is abuse!)"You are excited about something, I just wish you would tell me."I flipped him off. (Get it now?) Anger flashed in his eyes, and he abruptly stood up."We are tired of playing these games with you, Little Miss. Since the shots aren't working, we're gonna have to step it up."Two nurses stepped in, their heads bowed. They were just as abused by this horrid man as I was.("I hate it! People like you are why my voice has no power!")The nurses dragged me out of the doctor's office. I didn't fight. I knew where I was going. Fighting wouldn't stop that, it would just cause harm to these poor women. I learned this after the first few times I got away from them and hid in the garden. One had a fresh bruise on her face, and her eyes were red and swollen. I cooperated, and spoke to her for the first time, only saying "don't give up."
I gave up. I am the daisy that got trampled too many times, and stopped trying to grow back. That same nurse locks me onto a bed, though she knows I won't run away. I watch her eyes as she works, and they dart back and forth from my face to the ties on the bed. She stops on the last one, breathes slowly, and says, "you either."
They didn't take me back to my room. Instead, I was in the garden with the nurse. I don't remember coming out here. I don't remember the last three days. The nurse is sitting with me. I don't move, I just blink when necessary. The nurse finally realizes I've come to, and tells what happened."Shock therapy... Is something I don't agree with. My training was that it does more harm than good. You don't remember any of it, do you? I hope not. The things the doctors do here... It is an abomination. Things change. Medical techniques change. The doctors have been out of schooling for twenty or thirty years, and they aren't required to stay up to date, because they just work in a loony bin. Not that you are loony, Sweet Pea, you are one of the sanest ones here. Well, you and the others who get dumped here because they are defective. I just want you to know the nurses are on your side, but we need jobs too badly to do anything about it. I hope you understand..."("I... can speak. You know? But they are the reason I gave up on voice. No means no, you know? But not to all.")She was taken aback. I wanted her to know I trusted her, and valued what she said. I knew she was genuine."You... You don't have to tell me what happened. You don't have to tell anyone. But please keep talking. We can talk about anything you want."I looked down at my feet, and flexed my toes. ("You... Are like daisies. You keep getting stepped on, but you always grow back. I cannot.")"That's very sweet of you. Why do you say you can't though?"("I tried, but it was like winter. Too cold.")"I see that you sign with Desserae. Where did you learn to sign?"("I like all language, and I like storytelling with sign. I learned simple signs from the internet. Desserae is a better teacher.""I'm glad you can talk to him. He was all alone before you came here. He is only deaf, he doesn't belong here either."I nodded, and flexed my toes some more. "Well, I will quit bothering you. In a few weeks, a new doctor will be coming here. I think he'll be different. I'll be sure you get a chance to see him."I smiled at her. (Thank you!)
Desserae and I met because we have the same name. He goes by Rae, because who would want to sign his whole name? My full name is Raileign, but people are lazy and shorten it to Rai. It does look pretty on a piece of paper. He approached me first, because he saw me signing my name to the nurse who distributes meds. She understands basic sign, just enough to be offensive. She's the type of nurse with fake red hair and glasses at the tip of her nose, that you can't decide whether she hates her job or the people more. Desserae and I spend a lot of time outside during winter, but he won't come out when its warm. He says he overheats too easily. I don't know where he is from, as there are some personal details that we mutually agree not to discuss. We are not eachother's therapists. It is starting to get warm again, so he has left me all alone out here, which I don't mind. My favorite cherry tree is starting to bloom on the inner branches, so I climb into it and just sit, enjoying the afternoon sun. I see a nurse step outside for a smoke break, accompanied by a man I don't recognize. Along with enjoying the outdoors, I tend to use this time to watch the staff. It's surprising how much blackmail one can accumulate just by watching people when they think they are in privacy. Relations between staff, patients, staff and patients... Its all humorous to me. I haven't kept a written record of it all, but I might now. Anyway, this man was the new doctor, taking a smoke break as well. I didn't appreciate the smoke in MY garden, but it's not like they were the law-required 20 feet from the building, so most of the smoke goes back inside. The nurse and doctor where talking, then she motioned out to my garden. He nodded and thanked her. Squinting my eyes, I watched him closely as he took a few paces away from the building, into my domain. This felt like the beginnings of a game to me. I was at least 400 yards away from him, so I slipped down the side of the tree and smoothly moved backwards into a more densely forested area. I am in no mood to be yelled at and sent to the shock therapy room, so I had a raised bed with an invisible whole in the middle that I planned on hiding in. From the outside, it looks completely normal because the flowers have grown so thick, but the middle is hollowed out three feet deep. My garden was basically divided into two sections, trees and garden beds, but the beds are on the other side. Once I was in the cover of the trees, I sprinted straight towards the end of the grounds, where an impossible brick barrier is built. This is where the trees and beds merged, and I was stealthily able to cross to the to the other side without the doctor noticing. He was wondering under the trees still. I ducked down and moved as quickly as I could through the beds, slipped between the tall flowers of my hideout and -- its filled in! There was fresh dirt in the hole. I was livid. I stood still momentarily, glanced at the doctor, who was TOUCHING my tree. My tree, with the beautiful blooms on it, and he was pulling the blossoms off!
At this point I'm sure I went a little berserk and attacked him, but I don't remember any of that, so I can honestly deny it. I was back in my room when I was awake next. The new doctor was sitting in a chair next to me, reading some sort of book. I struggled to sit up, as whatever they gave me was still active in my muscles, and the doctor told me to stop, I would just tire myself out. (Why where you destroying my tree?!)"Please write. I don't know sign, and I don't have an interpreter." He handed me a new notebook and a pen. Believe it or not, this was the first time that anyone offered for me to write. I scrawled my question, and he nodded with the slightest of smiles."I knew that would be your first concern. I wasn't destroying, I was simply taking a sample. When the sedative wears off, I'll escort you back to my office to show you the results of a little experiment. Until then, I am curious to know more about your garden. Am I correct in assuming you are the primary one who takes care of the area out there?"(Yes. Professional come for trees, and to plant the flowers, but I do the watering and grooming.)"You are not allowed to pick your own flowers?"(No. The only thing that has changed about it is that I take care of it. Before it was ignored, just like everyone else here.)"Well aren't you honest! I take it you are not found of the other doctors here, I hope you will find me more... Modern than the others."(I already don't like you. You touched MY tree. And, you filled in my hiding spot. Oh, and you must be pretty weak to not be able to handle a few punches from a girl.) That finally got a rise out of him, but not the one I ever would have expected."I admit, your burst of anger was quiet unexpected. Do you often have blackouts like that? I would like to research those more with you, I believe they might tie back to what ever traumatic ex-"(I didn't black out! You were harming a helpless tree. If you must harm my garden, I will give you specific trees to torture.)
